Which Leatherman To Buy?

marine_man

Question

My Leatherman Supertool has gone MIA... and I need to replace it before my next fishing trip... it's pretty handy to have it close by during ice fishing instead of digging a needle nose out of my bag.

So, if you could pick any model, which would you buy? I was happy with the features the supertool had, although adding a scissors would be nice.

check out the ChargeTi, midrange in price but an upgrade from the wave. four blades accessible with a single hand. plus an awesome scissors, about 10 different bits for the driver tip, and better snips and a crimp for wire connections, which comes in very handy for a vex, boat lights, trailer lights, and many other things. I misplaced mine last year and went and bought a new one the day after.

I got a Wave as a wedding gift, and I use it often as I carry it all the time. I do wish it had a better philips setup, but it gets into tight spaces as it is. Just not very handy for driving in or backing out a long screw if you have to. Don't know what to recommend, but I do like my Wave. There are a couple of Gerber options that look good on paper and are priced pretty well. SOG also makes some awesome (and pricey) stuff. I've also got a Micra (?) that is OK but I took it off of my keychain as I always have my Wave.

I looked that one up, it looks good but its the same configuration as the Wave, comes with the extra bits, but quite a bit more money. The bit kits are available separately if a guy were to need them and it would still be 20-30 bucks less.

The reason I'm on the second is I wear it ALL of the time. Its like American Express, I never leave home without it. I got tired of switching it back and forth from my workwear to my everyday wear, and forgeting it sometimes at work. So now I have a "work" Wave and a "home" Wave.

Shouldn't you be sticking with a trusty victorinox, mac? grin

LOL. The Phoenix Foundation recovered a stash of stolen "wave" tool's while investigating a smuggling operation in Sierra Leone. It sounds like Murdock is up to his usual shady business.... smile

I usually go for the one that goes on sale. If you keep an eye out in Menards you can sometimes pick them up for $15. It's just the basic model though. I pick up a couple and put one in each vehicle and tackle box.

As a side note, I prefer the gerber tool but can't find as good of deals on it. I like how you can open it with one hand. I also have it on good authority that you can fish out a gerber through the ice with a magnet but not a leatherman.

I also have the wave and having all of the blades on the outside is a huge plus. I have another leatherman, the fuse, and it is not nearly as handy as the wave. It has the blades on the inside.

As a matter of fact the wave gutted a road killed doe yesterday...... not pretty, but it worked.

I don't know what the model of the one I have but, I guess I've had ot now goin on 12 years or so and carry it every day. The current one replaced one I had for about 3 years before I misplaced it. I found that they can be a little "sticky". So I just took a little lapping compound and worked it over for awhile and now it just about flops open. Also, I took a magnet and put the pliers points on it for several days and sure enough....it picked up the magnatism. That sure comes in handy. I called Leatherman about producing them with magnetic tips but she said something about how production would have to be changed..ya, ya, ya, ya. I've look at the newer ones but, to me, they seem too bulky and alittle pricey along with other name brands. I'll knock on wood that I hold on to it for awhile yet.

Thanks Everyone for the Input.. I ended up picking up a Wave... looks pretty handy!

I did like my Super Tool, but really like having the scissors on the wave...

I like the Wave and the fact that it's easier on your hands when you use the pliers. I found it difficult though to use the phillips screwdriver on the wave, which is why I like the Supertool.

My vote would have been the wave also. With that said the one I use the most it seems is my Leatherman Squirt that is on my key chain. At first I was skeptical for 30 bucks. It has paid for itself. Enjoy the new wave. Good Fishing!!
