What kind of minnow do you use with it?

Typically I will use a fathead. Might be the whole minnow or the head or just the tail.

Most time I just use the head.

I'm just like Tom/AKA Harvey Lee.. Just a fat head, maybe even a crappie minnow head.. No more.. the more bait you put on it, the less action its going to have. So I keep the actual bait to a minimum and only enough for a little taste. I have caught quite a few without any bait at all on these type lure.. IE Lindy Flyers, Rattle Varmints ect...

Never forget to let the fish tell you what they want. I've caught ample fish on a buckshot with a minnow hanging off each hook. Usually I just use a head, but sometimes more is better.

I jig harder when not prime time I found that the tail is stronger than the head and stays on better.

Sometimes putting 2 minnow heads on the spoon will get you more bites. I usually start with one but if they are not heading that real good start experimenting. I have seen guys catch fish with whole minnows on buckshot rattle spoons.

Sometimes a whole minnow and sometimes just the head. I have also cut a minnow in three pieces and put one on each point of the hook. I was in some finicky eyes one day and picked a minnow up off of the ice that I had stepped on and put it on. I ended up stepping on my minnows for the rest of that day. I guess the fish will tell ya what they want.

I've head really good luck this week with full crappie or fathead minnow on a single-hook (through the dorsal area) vertical spoon style jig (glow white or glow-white with red-stripe). I also went leader/swivel-less, tying the jig right to the line - and dropping the whole thing right to just 2-4 inches off the bottom, letting the minnow do the work. Every now and then I bounce the jig off the bottom. Jigging up seemed fruitless, a jig bounce off the bottom always produced one hit or another.

Oddly, I'm also finding in the spot I'm at - they turn on around noon and shut down around 3pm. I must be parked over a transient location between feeding/resting grounds.

But it is pulling perch and walleye out of the hole. So far its been my best week all season.

I did the same on northern Lake of the Woods. Only way I could keep the salted shiners from falling off.
