No I use Mobil 1. I don't look at it as a waste even though it cost a little more.

Good oil protection and a filter will give ones motor a long life.

I have used Amsoil and I would never say it was a waste.

When I change oil, I am not looking for the best deal but the best protection for the motor.

you are supposed to be able to go 25,000 miles with a filter change at 12,000. I run amsoil in my tahoe and change it once a year. we put on about 10,000-13,000 on the truck in a year. So for me, it's a once a year deal. As stated, more expensive, but I love the stuff!!! If you'd average it out, if I ran conventional oil, I'd have 3-4 oil changes a year, and have as much or probably more than an amsoil change into it.

I switched over to Amsoil a little over a year ago and use the 25k oil and filter. I went about 10K on the first change, and I'm at about 13K on the second one. I'm planning on changing the oil again around May, which would put me at about 10 months and 17K miles or so. One thing I do make sure is to check the oil level every few weeks or so and add if needed. My truck doesn't use much for oil, but ineveitably it does use a little keeping the same oil in for so long. Overall in the 23K miles or so that I've been running Amsoil, I've only had to add about 1/4 qt. Before I started using Amsoil, I was using Mobil 1 and changing every 6-8K.

I run either 5w20 semi synthetic Motorcraft oil, or Valvaline 5w30, and I change my oil every 3-5k. I personally dont see any benefit of not having my vehicles in and inspected at any higher millage then that. Most of the time my vehicles have well over 100k on it, and I think things just need to be inspected on a regular basis.

The only way to know for sure is with Oil Analysis. My engine is still breaking in (Duramax Diesel) so I'm changing based on wear metals found in oil analysis. So, for me I had a few 5,000 mile/ 3 month intervals with non-synthetic. Since the last analysis showed the wear metals is down significantly (i.e.. the engine is now fairly well broken in) I plan on going one year or 15,000 miles with Amsoil. Of course at 6mths or 7500 miles I'll sample the oil, send to Blackstone labs, and then decide what to do. Every engine is different so it's best to know what's going on by using oil analysis. With my wife's car (2002 Cadillac) it's always burned a quart every 2-3 months (since new when my dad bought it) so by adding a quart the additive package is always pretty good. Performing oil analysis on her car showed that she really never needs to change the oil. Just change the filter once or twice a year and add oil when needed. I usually drain an extra quart out once a year and then top up. However, I do perform oil analysis on her vehical twice a year and the results are good so the no change oil change works for her vehical.

I don't know the cost of an oil analysis but I'm sure it's probably close to the price of an oil change. To me it just makes better sense to change the oil and the filter at regular intervals and not have to worry about it. Oil and filter changes are cheap insurance and it keeps those poor guys from having to stand on the corner at Spiffy Lube trying to flag down customers.

Oil analysis has it merits. It will tell you if there is a problem WAY before you will ever realize it otherwise. An extra oil change or two never hurts an engine, but it will drain out any evidence that could have foretold an upcoming problem.

That said, doing it regularly on everyday vehicles probably isn't cost effective with todays engines.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
