Fish house license rules?

BLACKJACK

Recommended Posts

Ok so I went out to the DNR HSOforum and found this, looks like I do need a license if left over night. Now how about that second part, 'registering' your trailer, what does that mean? Do you just go up to the courthouse? Does a license come with that too?

• A shelter may not be left unattended between midnight and one hour prior

to sunrise unless the shelter is licensed.

Note: The Dept. of Public Safety - DVS now requires trailers used to haul

fish houses or dark houses and enclosed trailers or recreational trailers

used for fishing to be registered. See your local Deputy Registrar for

trailer registration.

I got mine registered like any trailer, I got the lifetime for it. Here in the cities on the west side they have been tagging quite a few that have not registered there's. Mine was a total of I believe $208.00 with tax and license. They use weight plus price of house etc. simular to boat trailer license.

Just so it's not confusing - dark house and ice house are the same thing to the DNR. Their site lists it mostly as "dark house shelter" - but that covers your ice-house.

If you want to leave it up after sunset (or set it up before sunrise), you need it licensed.

Also - if you want more than one shelter up, each one needs to be individually licensed - and you can purchase more than one darkhouse/icehouse shelter license.

I was just thinking, if you need a trailer licence on your fish house why do you need a fish house licence? It must be another double taxation thing the state has going.

One lets you pull it down the highway system, the other one lets you keep your shelter up overnight. Two very separate things.

After about a zillion posts on this subject you would think there would be no more misinformation being given out. As stated above, you only need a license if the house is unattended between midnight and one hour before sunrise. Actual sunset/sunrise, setting it up, etc. is not part of the law.

Thanks for the follow up, Maverick. I could've swore that's what I read on the DNR PDF a coupla weeks back - but I'm old, and I barely remember what color socks I put on in the morning.

Thanks again.

I can't even remember if I put socks on at all.

If you stay with it and take it off with you then all you need is your DNR number on the house. You can also use your name and address or your DL number, but the DNR number never changes. Write your number on a piece of cardboard in at least 2 inch letters and put it in the plastic sleeve and you are good to go.

Whether or not it stays on the lake or goes with you - you need one of these three things on it at all times:

1) Name and Address, (or)

2) DNR number (or)

3) Driver license number.

When it becomes a "i'm leaving it there" - that's when it needs the darkhouse license - and when you buy that, it splits in two. One for your wallet, one to attach to the shelter.

Personally, I went and bought 2" reflective lettering that is my DNR license #, and that with my darkhouse license tag - slipped those into my plastic sleeve holder for my popup shelter, nad just leave it on the lake.

Went to the DMV office over lunch, its going to cost me $66.00 to register it to go down the road frown Thats with no sales tax since its over three years old. I know they call it a registration fee but it sure feels like a tax.

Here's my situation. I bought an old 14-foot single axle camper and converted it into a fish house. I thought I could get the lifetime title for $60, but the original title has it listed at 4,500lbs. I believe it needs to be under 3K pounds to get the lifetime title.

Now, I can't believe that camper weighs 4,500 pounds. Does anyone know what I need to do to get the official weight and the title corrected?

Get it weighed with all the gear that you plan on bringing. Bring the weight slip to the DMV when going for the license, and leave the title at home. Register it as a "home made" fish house and you should be fine. Bring any receipts for all the stuff you purchased to make it. They shouldn't charge you for the tax on the stuff you already paid tax on.

Buy any license/tag from the DNR, you get one. It's on your fishing license, it's on any license you get. Think of it like your driver-license number or SSN -- but for the DNR.

You're assigned a 9-digit number that's stuck with you, and is shown on any license/tag you purchase from the DNR.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
