setting up auger

Jae

Question

making the switch to amsoil saber 100:1 in my lazer mag express. questions are reg gas or high test, stock spark plug or upgrade, possible carb adjustments, and other things to get this thing running right as im getting mad at it, binding at the bottom of the hole, new blades so pitch may be wrong, may go back, and auger speed is lacking.

you should have no problems using 100:1. Just use non oxy gas and you should be fine. I bought mine new in 08 and I had the same binding problem. I called Strikemaster and told them about the binding issue and they sent me a new set of blades, great customer service

new blades are doing the same thing as the old ones, the pitch may be wrong, i talked with a tech and he said put new blades on and if that doesnt work its probably the pitch. so i may be sending the auger to them, not the powerhead. also idk where to get non oxy gas by me, as im on the east coast

jae you may want to search out a street rod assn. because those guys won't run anything but Non-oxy in the street rods or start calling every station in the area but I am sure there is a station out there.

Make sure to let the auger do the work and by that I mean don't apply any downward pressure when cutting your hole. If there still is a problem it might very well be a problem with the pitch. As a test you could shim the backside of the blade to decrease the amount of bite to see if it helps.

I just reread what you wrote and if it cuts good until you get to the bottom of the hole then it is a matter of figuring out what it take to punch through that last layer. With my Nils I need to lift up a little but with my old Jiffy it worked better to give it a push at the end to brake the last little bit of ice or it would cork screw through the last layer of ice.

jim the auger either doesnt break threw the bottom of the hole or corkscrews threw the bottom, i just let the weight of the auger push it down. and as for non oxy ive never seen it by me. as for shimming it its gona have to wait lots of rain this way and warm weather not so good for the ice and i may have to use the 14' 2x12 to get on. i should be headed to up state ny next week so i may be able to get non oxy up there and ill get a good test, but im gona make up a batch of high test and amsoil here with some seafoam to clean out the fuel system

In CT all your fuel is likely the "non-oxy" gasoline discussed on this forum. In the midwest, the agricultural lobby has dictated that our fuel contain the ethanol produced by their local plants, and out your way I bet that is just not the case. Look at the pump and see if it has a label noting that the gasoline contains ethanol. If no label, no ethanol.

In the end, it's no big deal anyway, as you will not be able to see or feel any difference in performance.

ran a mix of 93 oct w/amsoil 100:1 a cap full of seafoam. noticed a slight difference when the old 87 oct 40:1 left the system. had to bring the idle up a little as i let it idle for a few minutes and it wanted to stall throtle well idk when i hit the thumb bar it goes from idle to almost a stall/bogs down then goes wot

As for fuel, the material below is from the TM049XA operator manual:

B. Fuel

Use unleaded regular, unleaded premium or reformulated

automotive fuel only. You may use gasoline containing the

following components identified in Table 3.

• DO NOT use leaded fuel.

• Fuel must be fresh and clean. NEVER use fuel left

over from last season or stored for long periods.

• DO NOT use fuel containing Methanol (Wood

Alcohol).

The use of alternative fuels such as E85

or E20 are not recommended for use in

Tecumseh engines. Alternative fuels with high alcohol

content can cause hard starting, poor engine performance,

and may cause internal engine damage.

NOTE

Damage and/or performance problems that will occur from

use of fuels, other than those listed in the Operator’s

Manuals will not be considered warranty.

Table 3. Recommended Fuel

Fuel Component Percentage

Ethanol 10%

Grain Alcohol (“Gasohol”) 10%

MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) 15%

ETBE (Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) 15%

I have the LazerMag Express in the 8" flavor and just started using Saber oil this year at the 100:1 fuel:oil ratio. Performs fantastic with regular unleaded fuel. Have to be careful that the choke is fully disengaged before operating the auger as it will bog down and slow or stop at full throttle under load.

I'vealways used unleaded reg in my S/M with the amsoil and alittle seafoam and never have had a problem, I usually start it once in the summer on the previous seasons fuel then just before first winter trip dump old stuff and put in fresh fuel and fire her up and run for a couple of minutes, always 1-2 pulls.

And a fresh plug every 2-3 years.

update, went upstate ny fishing the hard water, the auger worked ok but not great, hard time punching through the last inch or so and still had the throttle issue, ripped the carb apart today and found that the diaphram was warped in a way that it was blocking the pin that opens the needle, replaced now she works fine, good throttle response ect. will try her on some ice this week or weekend and see if that was the main problem

non oxygenated gas 92 octane or whatever it is... If you look at your lazer auger it has a space in the flighting at the end that has a void in it in 2 spaces that void gets hooked on the bottom of the ice so to avoid it don't run your auger down past the bottom of the ice to far.
