Fish ID: Sauger?

I had a pet walleye in a fish tank that I get when it was 4 inches and had it til 9 inches. They don't get a white tip on the tail til somewhere between 7 and 8 inches. At least mine didn't until then. It did not ever have spots on the dorsel like in the pic except the black spot at the rear base of it.

I took a previous poster's advice and went to wiscfish.org and downloaded their FishID app. After looking at the two photos for sauger and walleye; I'm going to cast my vote with a yearling walleye.

Here's the pics:

My original pic looks more in sync with the walleye photo. The camo on the sauger is extremely pronounced, unlike mine. Although the shape and coloration of its fins seem more in sync with the sauger. Hopefully the fisheries will respond; but for now, I'll throw my hat in with the walter camp.

Thanks for everyone who has chimed in. =) Ack, gotta suit up and head back out there. The sun is setting. Hopefully I'l catch another wallgereye.

Here's a pic of a "Saugeye" Was pretty sure what it was but sent pic to a buddy who is a Fisheries Biologist. Supposedly the way they determine is from counting the rays on the Dorsal. His eyes must be much better than mine as all he had was the pic.LOL Afterall, he is an expert. It's too bad that Alberta doesn;t recognize Saugeye as a separate species.

Unfortunately, all I caught yesterday were crappies (those were easy to ID smile ). Looks like the walk out to the shack this morning is going to be just this side of treacherous. Glazed everything.
