Transporting exotics

Recommended Posts

Looking at maybe going to texas to do a hog hunt and maybe try to get some typoe of exoctic as well. Does anyone know does MN have a law agaisnt bringing a hide and head of and exotic back? I know some states you can get in big trouble for transporting the meat, hide or head, wasnt sure about us.

Good question. Most exotics shot overseas the meat stays there. I would contact a local taxidermist to see what they say. I don't know what the big concern would be if your taking it for your own family to eat or to mount.

I would think it would depend on if its coming out of a CWD zone if there are any in texas. I think you best bet is to have it cape out for mounting if thats your plan is get it mounted. I know anything brought out of wyoming to minnesota has to caped out to bring into minnesota, Not sure about Texas just cape it out and cut the rack off the skull clean all brain matter and then get it mounted

The cwd law applies only to cervids being brought into Minnesota from certain areas, within certain states, known to have cwd. This information can be found on page 59 of the 2009 handbook. So you're ok bringing back exotics or hogs. Good luck to you. It sounds like fun and there's no shortage of hogs in Texas!

I went to a camp on the King Ranch last April for a Rio Grande turkey hunt. The turkey hunt took all of 35 minutes so I had time to shoot two Nilgai (exotic) a hog, a javelina, and a coyote. I had no issues transporting any of the meat back to MN via commercial plane. I did have the Nilgai head done Eurpoean-style with a local Texas taxidermist.

You shouldn't have any issues.

Just for discussion sake, I hate the Tejas style of pay for hunting. I was stationed in Texas for 11 years and hunted the river bottoms of the Frio and Sabinal rivers where that was legal. Anyway, they have a huge hog problem down there and what miffs me about that is they want YOU to pay to rid thier property of vermin that tear up the place and compete for the food. Bro in law has a small place that is riddled with them and kills them on sight and will let anyone do the same.

We ate the turkey, the hogs and the nilgai. Nilgai is incredible. The javelina and coyote were considered predators and you could whack as many of thiose as you wanted to. I did not have to pay for shooting any of the exotics or predators. The ranch had a quota to get rid of a certain number of nilgai. You could shoot as many hogs as you wanted too.

Yeah, the hogs in texas are nuts. My buddy went and did a hunting show down there and said if you ever want pig, go find a rancher, give him some Wisconsin Cheese and get all the pork you want. LOL, they are equivilant to Prairie Dogs, Ranchers want them gone yesterday.
