Fly line on rattle wheels

Where do you guys get your fly line for your rattle wheels. I am looking for brand and an idea of its cost. Seems there is a bunch of it out there just trying to locate the right stuff for ice application.

Got mine at joe's sporting goods. 75 yards for three bucks. No brand name, just bulk stuff. They had green, yellow and orange.

JR's Tackle up by Fleet Farm (just north of) in Brooklyn Center has a supply of it in various colors. I beleive it's 2 for $5 which is pretty reasonable. While there, you could also look @ their bulk ice fishng tackle they have with is pretty extensive. Good peole to deal with.

Just to be clear, you're looking for fly line BACKING, not actual fly fishing line. Actual fly fishing line will set you back $50 or more for 90 feet. Backing can be bought at GM, Cabelas, Fleet Farm, etc.

Just make sure you don't buy floating fly line.

i bought a spool of braided dacron, 300 yds for like 10 bucks if i remember right. thats what i use, 80lb, then tie a 4-6 foot leader of mono or flouro on.

Fly line is awesome for rattle reels. No tangles, easy on your hands for hand reeling, and strong, Ive never had it break. It also wont get cut by the ice in the hole. Way better than that braided or coated "tip up line" The coated stuff has too much memory, and the braided stuff tangles.

I also be the bulk stuff for $3.50 for 25 yards.

I dont like the braid it is very easy to tangle and the black tip up line coils very badly.

I like to use thill pro series slip bobbers with the metal grommit on the top, and soft glow beads as bobber stop, as they dont get stuck on the line like traditional tie bobber stops.

Yeah he probably is talking about actual fly line- bulk running line of fly line not the shooting head part or an actual line set or 90-100 ft ($$$). They have been selling cheap bulk stuff and yes it works great on rattle reels- not tip ups. It doesn't tangle and the best thing, and the reason I think it has probably gotten so popular is even if your hole freezes over at night the line doesn't freeze in, it will still slip through so you don't have to wake up with all your minnows robbed off on a cold night.
