LX 5 troubles

eurolarva

Question

I was out on Mtka last night and in 15 ft of water. If I turned my gain above one I saw clutter from 5 ft to the bottom. I was the only person fishing this area but even so I tried IR and could not clean it up. I was using a chubby darter and could not see it through the mess. When I switched to 8 degree cone it worked fine. Does this sound like the 20 degree cone is bad on my transducer? This is my third year with the unit and am going to lake of the woods in three weeks. Best price I have seen for a ducer is around $100.

Are you sure that you weren't seeing weeds. Was there gaps between the lines?? Did you have other holes to try it in and what were the results there?? You might want to try to post on the ice fishing forums, many more viewers.

were you on a sharp break?

If you were, the wide beam (heck even the narrow beam sometimes) will pick up the bottom as well as the side of the break.

This happened to us yesterday. I was fine in my hole, but the hole next to me has 3ft of unreadable bottom, so we moved a little bit and it was fine.

I took it apart and cleaned it and checked all the connections and the cables and don't see anything wrong. My next opportunity to test it will be next weekend. I hope it is plankton, sunfish or weeds but I noticed once when it appeared clean that when I went to zoom mode it went on the fritz again. Anybody know where I can get a transducer local if I need one in a hurry? I have not seen a marcum at cabellas, gander and only the LX1 at fleet farm. I know that nature vision went out of business so I am not even sure who supports them anymore.

Went back out there. Must have been weeds. I drilled a bunch of holes and had the same problem except in one spot that was in 11 ft of water. I fished there for 4 hours and caught some real nice crappies and the flasher worked flawlessly.
