New Carpet

I forget the name of the place but about five years ago I had an outfit on Hwy 8 in Forest Lake put in carpet for me. I wanted it cheap so I could sell the house. They were pretty reasonable. When I bought the house I'm in now I used a place in North Branch that I was happy with. I would have used the place in Forest Lake again but they didn't return my phone calls.

I just had some installed today in my house, I had "Berger floor covering" from Shakopee do it. I thought about just buying the carpet myself and installing it, but it wasnt much more to have them install it. I am glad I did, it is done, it was done fast, and done right. It sure does look nice as well. I spent a couple hundred more to have it proffesionally installed, 2 hallways, 2 stairways and a big room, along with installing some laminated flooring. I know I could have never done as good of a job!

Sigstads is on Hwy 8. Thomco Carpet is downtown. Haven't been in either for a while. Thomco is one store, family owned. Think Sigstads is part of the Hamernick family of carpet stores. One thing about the special on installation, it's a "standard install", extras will cost you and each step will cost an extra 4.00-5.50 dollars...last time I checked.

Gotone...thats on the low end. HD is more like 10 bucks a step, with more extras for metals, floor prep, whatever they can jab you for. I've done installs for them at 2 seperate times over the past few years (left both times on my call because of "creative differences:)

Still, the "any size install for 99 bucks" deal is likely to be a savings over a standard install, especially if you have a whole house.

Where they WILL likely get you is by selling you more carpet than you need. The "computerized" measuring system that lays out and estimates the amount of carpet they sell you is a joke. We routinely had LOTS of leftover carpet....folks were not pleased. An extra 10 yards of 30.00/yd carpet and pad chews up a whole lot of "free labor' in a hurry.

And if they come out to measure and you don't buy from them, you pay for the measure. No good. Plus, 1 yr. labor warrenty (used to be lifetime).

Having been in the trade for 30+ years (no, my knees aren't gone) I just can't agree with the way the big box stores do it...

Been out of the business for a few years and don't keep up on things/prices. Boy, you guys are making a killing on the steps:), All you need to do is install steps and you will have that new lake place paid off a lot sooner......just kidding.

Good luck with the lake place. I'm about the same age as you and my kids are similar in age. I had a place on Lake Osakis that I bought on a contract for deed. We had it for a few years when the kids were under three years old. Sold it after a few years so we could afford to send the kids to school. My hope was to buy something up in your neck of the woods, but the cost of lakeshore property has put a big time damper on that thought for a while. Not to mention my daughter starts college next year and my son will be in two years. Guess, I'll have to wait till I retire.

Gotone; I think we all might be working a couple more years! Especially if we take the leap on the cabin...

Unfortunatly, the installers don't get 10 bucks a step (of course!) Personally, I charge 5 bucks a step for my own work, so you were right on. But the box stores don't treat thier installers that well:)
