Canons are very, very durable, even with kids dropping them or using in wet conditions. Easy to use as well. Has metal case and very point and shoot friendly. Not sure what is newest model, but I had on old S10 for about 10 years, and now have a SD1100, can't say enough good about them.

Good luck.

A second for the Canon point & shoots. I've had two now. I loved the first one but my soon-to-be wife filled it with water on during her bachelorette weekend. She bought us a new Canon A590. The old Canon still works perfect except for the flash is dead because of the water. So it took a complete submersion in water for several hours and still is running strong.

Believe it or not, I like the photos that come out of my two point and shoots better than my digital SLR.

Even if you don't go with Canon, you'll likely get a good point & shoot no matter what. Just go to a big retailer and have a clerk "sell you" on different models so you can learn the plus and minuses. Do that at a few different retailers and you'll begin to figure it all out.

I had good luck with a Sony Cybershot (till I spilled a beer on it). Now, we have a Canon Cybershot, and it's been a very good camera. I would recommend either, but Sony's memory cards are more expensive.

One of my biggest criterion for a camera is the ability to take a quick picture. So many digital cameras seem to take an eternity to snap the photo once you push the button. Make sure to test them out.

Ditto what Ralph said! This feature is a MUST with kids. Our first Nikon took an eternity to actually take the picture after the button was pressed --- this means that "captured moment" is long gone!

We then quickly switched to a Canon SuperElph 20000 (or something like that) smile and it worked much better. (I now have a Nikon point and shoot in my tackle box).

For Christmas -- we bought a Canon T1i DSLR --- takes "taking fast pictures" to a whole 'nother level.

I have always bought Sony cameras with a view finder plus the lcd display. In bright or sunlightave bought the LCD is hard to see. With the viewfinder you can see the picture plus it will optical zoom. I have bought about 8 sony over many years and been satisfied with all of them. The viewfinder is very important to me.

Also if you set to take smaller/lower res images it goes faster. With todays high pixel counts, you don't really NEED to take them at highest setting, unless you are printing out large images. I still take higher res pics, but usually just use for HSOforum posting so smaller pics is all I really need.

Some of those long delays are quite possibly the result of a slow memory card. The high speed cards seem to work better.

Good point, Darren --- Amazon has some great deals going on these too...I just bought an 8GB

Class 6 for $20, free shipping.

I bought an Olympus 850SW. Shock and Waterproof. Since I am mostly using it outdoors, I wanted something that could handle being outdoors for fishing and hunting and I don't have to worry about babying it.

Lots of features that I don't use and many that I do (available light, panorama, shoot and select, and even underwater) but whenever I am fishing in the rain, sleet, snow or moving my gear around I am very happy I have it.
