if you are using a spinning real typical rule of thumb is to spool the line w/ the spool "manufacturer sticker up" if it starts to twist when you are putting it on the reel, turn the spool over. Make sure to have steady tension on the line when spooling. you may also want to try a florocarbon line or superline like fireline Crystal or spiderwire.

another trick is if the line seems to have a lot of memory, or coils up you can run the spool from your reel under hot water, (not hot enough to damage anything) for about a minute.

If it is your jigging rod, make sure you are using a good quality swivel also.

If you are using an open face spinning reel, are you closing the bail by using the reel? That is more than likely your problem, if you close the bail with your hand instead of reeling up that should eliminate the twisting. I had this problem a couple years ago on my open water set up, I would get twists and knots all the time until I read an article saying that you should just flip the bail with your hand. I still might get a twist every once in a while but not nearly as much.

This will make a difference, spooning the line on in the wrong direction causes it to coil more. I used the trilene xl in the 4 and 6 lb for years with very little problems.
