expected snow fall

What is the expected snow fall in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin (12 inches or more) going to do to the ice that we have??? Since it is not yet safe to drive on, will this mean that we won't get to drive out on the ice for a long time yet? Thank you.

It should insulate the ice pretty good, which slows ice formation down, and it hides the really bad spots, pretty much making the ice twice as dangerous as normal. It'll be a while before i drive out, but i always got the snowmobile, but even that is still scary when you cant tell if your on 6 inches or 2 inches, i dont like the thought of swimming in that ccoolld water. be safe and big fish to ya.

Reports are for anywhere from 3-12 inches in the Ottertail area. Although its probably going to change as noone seems to know the exact path yet. More snow on the ice is not good anyway you look at it. Flooding is almost certain which in turn makes everything else more work to get out. Would have been nice to get another 6 inchs or so before this so cross your fingers that your area doesnt get hit hard. I never take a vehicle on the ice. That what I bought the ATV for. I'd rather lose a $5000 sled/atv than 20-30k pickup.

AHHHH!!! Jmnhunter, an avatar after my own heart!! grin As for the snow, If you recall, last winter, in North Central MN (North of Brainard) they had a similar situation. There was a covering of ice 10-12" on the lakes, they got hit with a substantial snowfall. That further retarded the forming of ice, put a snow load on the ice that already did exist, so every hole you would punch, a geyser would errupt turning any surrounding snow into slush. It was later in the season before wheel houses went out and even with a wheeler or sled just traveling was rough. Even the Sleds were freezing down in the slush where they were parked. This is the LAST thing we need!! Phred52
