Size of generator

Recommended Posts

I am looking to buy a generator for my fish house. I will be running lights, TV, dvd player, among other things off of it. Would a 2000 watt continour (3000 watt surge) be big enough? or should I go with a 3000 watt?

Also, Ive heard the rave about the Hondas, but they are expensive. Has anyone used a Briggs and Straton before and is it a reliable brand for generators?

Thanks for the help!

I have a Honda 2000 that I use for work and for ice fishing. I also have a coleman 2500 with a Briggs engine. The coleman doesn't get used much because it is very loud. The Honda would be your best bet because it puts out "clean" power. This is important for powering electronics. In the past I used cheapy generators on construction sites and they would ruin radios and battery chargers eventually. You don't have to get a Honda but make sure the one you get puts out clean power. Do some research, maybe look at the Yamaha for example.

i also have the honda 2000. started out with the cheaper very loud 3000 watt brand. it worked. used lots of gas. everyone near you will hate you but it will work. the 2000 watt runs a flat screen, 2 ceiling fans, on board charger, florescent lights, without even reving the engine. the coffee pot, micro, deep fat fryer will rev the engine but have yet to overload it. i have seen some other brands like yamaha & others that are probably as good for less money. i would save the 300.00 on the cheapie & buy the better brands. in the long run it will be cheaper to own a quality one.

I have a Honda EU2000i. If I'm not mistaken it runs about 7 hrs. on a gal. of fuel. Super quiet and dependable. Nobody wants to hear one of them construction type generators banging away on an otherwise peaceful night.

I have the 1700 eu sold by John Deere I use it camping all the time where it will run all night sometimes in the day too (I like my TV directv coffee pot ect..) it sips the gas keeps batteries charged with no problem and runs all my toys and I have it on 100' 10 ga wire out in the woods and you have to strain to hear it it is my go to generator for 90% of my portable power use Ill dig out the big gen if I have a major power outage in the winter for the 220 option the new technology makes the inverter style gen the best thing going

For the record I have 4 gen sets 6300 large gen for major winter outages my welder generator a coleman 2500 and the john deere (If I spend a few days on the ice in the shack the john deere goes)

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
