Good old wood heat

My dad had a kerosene drip pan stove, but I think Mom threw it out, after he died. That thing could blast you out. A friend Clayton had one in his house almost burned it down, too hot in corner. I think he's switching propane. But wood is alot cheaper to run.

I switched over to wood a couple of years ago when the price of propane was through the roof and I really like it. I can go to a guy that I know that runs a small saw mill in the area and he sells me the pieces of the logs that are cut off when the logs are being squared up and prepared for making the finished boards. I can get a bundle of 8' long pieces that's maybe 4'-5' in diameter for like $10 and all of it is good ole seasoned oak, maple, and birch and all no more than like 3" thick so it can be cut with a skil saw or chop saw....no chainsaw or splitting required. To me nothing beats the warmth of a wood heater and I don't think I'll go back even though I still have the propane heater in my house.

I used a wood burner in my first couple of permanent houses on Tonka. I let other people use the house and I figured if they didn't bring wood, they could just get cold. Also, my boys liked to go out and night fish and its hard to get carbon monoxided with wood. If you go to sleep, the stove goes out and you get cold and wake up. And its really hard to cause an explosion with one. I thought we had gone over to propane completely but a week ago, #2 son came over and pulled one of the wood stoves out of the shed for one of his houses. A wood stove makes a friendly sort of heat.

Back in the early/mid '60's, when we put out cardboard covered spear houses on the Minn river, that was the way we heated them. Now days with the wheelhouse or the flip-over portys it just wouldn't work. The woodstove did do a fine job of heating the house though, and it was a nice dry 'penetrating' type of heat. Phred52

I have a wood stove in my 6x10 permanent. Its so nice once everything is heated up. I have the house well insulated and I usually leave the stove burn for an hour and pretty much leave it go out because we get too hot. Much nicer than having to drag the propane around or worrying about malfunctions. The wood never fails you!!

Here is a quick look...

I love wood heat for anything....shop, deer camp tent, home....I wish I had a small one for my 8 by 12 fish house.....anyone know where a guy could buy a small one?
Do a search on _bay for "portable wood stove" there is a real nice one for sixty bucks. Same model goes for up to 100 bucks.
