Sue, there's nothing wrong with being a hunter and taking pictures of animals in their surroundings and in their natural element. It shows your appreciation of the animal(s).

The old saying goes that some old dogs can't be taught new tricks. Likewise, some of the mentally blind can't be taught to be open-minded.

I work with a lot of people who have to think extremely rationally or they won't perform well at their jobs. Some of them have expressed that they don't "get" hunting but they don't badmouth it. They just have no interest in doing it. Unfortunately, most of the people who don't "get" hunting think its all about shooting or killing something, which I guess is hopefully the end result. But I think they believe we all have a glimmer in our eye when we wake up that we're going to get to go out and blow an animal out of the woods with our rifle or bow, which is the case for a small minority of hunters. For the majority, though, its about the experience - hoping for that big buck and/or hunting and eating what you hunted like our forefathers and mothers. I view the actual act of shooting a deer as a melancholy event. I am happy, yet appreciative and realize the consequenses of my actions. I ended the life of this deer so that I may enjoy the meat may look at the rack on the wall for years to come. I didn't just head out to the woods because I wanted to shoot a deer for the heck of it. I have actually had rationally-minded people pause and think when explained this way. Unfortunately, most people dead-set against hunting arent thinking rationally.

Tell them we need some form of population control or we'd be crying about the animals starving or spreading disease. The animals have had to adapt and adjust because of people.

I'd add that the human race had better adopt some form of population control, as our numbers are really getting out of hand, worldwide. If we don't, then nature will eventually do it for us.

Eventually, we'll cross that line that separates good living from mere surviving.

well it was a "facebook" friend that had the same interest as I do (photography field) and we hooked up,, we even talked about hunting and how she didn't hunt, but didn't have a problem with it. (or so I though!!) so we carried on and come hunting season, I was posting on my own facebook that I was "heading out for a deer hunt!!" and whoa,, she come at me with both barrels (so to speak) and won't let it go!! I have had to block her, I get hate mail from her, and she's gone off the deep end! she slams me and everybody like me, saying I shoot, kill, murder with no remorse!! if she really knew me, she'd know that I take what I can for our table, and have plenty of respect for wildlife,, but in her eyes, it's all about killing innocent animals,, poor poor things.

she actually scares me,, she's mean about it all,, you just don't know what a person like that is capable of.

then she slammed my ability to photograph,, she said I wasn't a "photographer" due to my hunting. d'oh!!!

she's a nut bar!!!

I would just continue to block and ignore her, I'd think even most non-hunters can see that she is probably not "all there". There really is no arguing or reasoning with an extremest, it doesn't matter what side of a debate they are on.

I'd explain to them that a very small number of deer die of old age, and the vast majority of deer die in 1 of 4 ways:

1. They are killed by predators. Usually eaten alive.

2. They are killed by vehicles. In many cases agonizingly. In many cases property & human life is at risk as well.

3. They die of starvation and/or exhaustion. Not pleasant.

4. They are killed by hunters.

I'd argue that the most humane way to go of the 4 above is to be killed by hunters.

1 further comment I'll make, is that she's now "attacking" my husbands brother (who also posted in this thread in facebook) I don't think she'll bother with my husband as she thinks I've "manipulated" him into posting there,, she really has no clue who I am or my husband,,

she has unfortunately painted us all with the same brush.

Personally, if it is someone you have never met, unfriend her and report her to facebook. I have been teaching in Elem. schools for over 15 years and I realize sometimes that some women don't let things go (I am referring to the freaky friend and only her!), if unfriending her does work, I suggest making random slams back at her about her weight or hair or clothing choice.....either way, I really wouldn't worry about her. You sister in laws, if they can't bring themselves to respect you as a person, there is not one dag nabbin' thing you can do about it

yes, I have deleted her and blocked her,, so she's not bothering me anymore, but as I said she's insisting that she gets my brother in law involved now, (mind you the guys are laughing like crazy about it) they find it funny, while I find it offensive. my hubby said I am her "target" so now I've taken that away from her,, she's going to find someone else. she has quite a reputation in town for being "crazy" crazy I was warned about our friendship,, now I know why!!!! grin

no matter, I'm done with it all,, thanks folks!!!

So a deer that was able to walk around as it pleased, ate whatever it wanted, and was shot by a hunter who then ate it is worse than a cow who stood in its own excrement 24/7, was confined to a muddy lot or pasture, and then slaughtered.

Unless your attacker is a vegetarian she has no right to call you a barbarian because you hunt, she just pays someone else to kill cuddly animals.
