lots2fish28
Well today kicked off my Ice fishing 09/10 year. I was west of the cities. Wore a life jacket and we had a throwable along also with a rope. Chiseled my way out as far as I could that I would still be on 2.5inches of Ice the farther out the thinner it got. Walking out was interesting also there where a few spots I hit with the Chisel and she went threw on the first poke kind of nerve racking but worked slow and found a good way out and back. I am pretty suprised at how crazy people are when heading out on thin Ice I watched a couple people come out after I was out there and they had no chisel no life jacket and did not pay attention where they where going. They walked over a few spots that had to be razor thin cause thats where i chiseled and it was an inch at the most thick. They walked acrossed it like it was no big deal and I think they where pretty suprised when they got out there how little of ice there actually was. So just to let everyone know be very carefull wear a life jacket even if you see others on the lake chisel your way out and dont assume anything. Fishing was slow a few small gills and one crappie. But couldnt get out to any deeper water where I needed to be

waterbound
I was out spearing on Lake Marion in Lakeville today. The water was pretty murky and nothing hit the tip-up, but it was still fun to get out! Ice ranged from (less than?) roughly 2 to about 4 inches. Heres the pics:

Swill
I am sorry but how can you enjoy icefishing with a life jacket on and having to chisel every few feet? Not too mention the trouble you are making for first responders to have to save you a$%^ when you fall in.wait a few more days man, or put a sign on the lake access saying you will save yourself if you fall in. waterbound
A life jacket is just like another layer, it really doesn't make things any different, except you float with it on. Ice is never safe so it wouldn't be a bad idea to use a chisel to check the ice every few feet all winter (not that I would) and most people will bring ice picks with in addition to their life jacket so they can pull themselves out and don't need the first responders to rescue them. St_Croix_Banks
I'm guessing since you are spearing Northern you are just in a few feet of water close to shore? Probably not that dangerous if you have several people in the group watching each other.
waterbound
The water was probably only 4-5 feet. I was actually alone and hadn't planned on spearing but I brought the house and spear with just in case I changed my mind. The other guys just happened to be fishing the same area. icefishing21
i feel the ice is deffinately safe enough where i was, i was out there with two buddies and we were all standing right next to each other and never heard any cracks. we were also both sitting in my 160 pound ice house and no cracking or warping of the ice. Mr. Pike1
Wow, those are some very cool pictures to see of first ice. I am much to skittish for early ice. I like a good 8 inches to get my courage up and really like late ice when the ice is supporting full size trucks.
