Tone of grunt call??

Recommended Posts

Just curious what people use for their grunt calls. The ones I have have an o-ring that allows you to change the tone from mature buck through young buck all the way into doe grunt/bleat. I typically have mine at mid to young buck as I feel a mature buck may scare away younger bucks. If I'm in an area where I feel there's a big, dominant, mature buck, I'll put it on mature buck to try and tick him off and have him come looking for a fight.

Any philosophies on this?

I have the true talker? and the new bone collector. I have only had one respond to a tending grunt, that happen about 18 years ago on a Lohman grunt call. It was a beautiful 8 pt, wall mounter for sure, other than that I haven't had much success with them.

In my experience the tonal depth is not that important. This fall, I called in a little 4ptr to 25 yds with a deep grunt sequence. He didn't seem intimidated as he came in at steady, curious saunter. I have never had a buck(that I saw) turn tail after hearing deeper sounding grunts. Some deer simply ignore them. I am certain that the effectiveness of calling depends on the buck/doe ratio in a given area.

I'm curious as to what type of cadence people use while calling. The only true buck grunting I've ever heard was on an outdoor nature TV show, and the buck was following a doe in heat. His grunting was low, and drawn out over a long period of time - perhaps as much as 15 to 20 seconds per grunt.

Baaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...................

I've spent thousands of hours in stand and have yet to hear a definitive buck grunt in the woods.

I did call in a small spiker on the first day of rifle season with my son, but have not called in another deer since. Nor have I called in a decent buck in the last 25 years of deer hunting.

I am doing something wrong? I try to mimic what I hear the guys do on TV.

I tend to make several short, deep grunts, over about a 1-2 minute period. Then I'm quiet for 10-15 minutes. Then I return to the same cadence, several (maybe 5-7) short deep grunts, and quiet again.

I sometimes think I might sound more like a large hog in the woods.

Does this sound about right?

I have a true talker grunt tube set to the mature buck. It works well if I see a buck in the field and want him to turn and come in my direction. The one I have the best luck wit for some reason is a lohman that straps on my arm. It probably sounds more like what I hear in the woods.

I have heard plenty of buck grunts in the woods. The don't sound at all to me like the grunt tubes. The bucks always sound more like they saying ECK, ECK, ECK, than a grunt. If you ever see a buck trailing or doe, or heading to one, listen closely. The sound is very subtle but I have always heard them grunting quite consistently when hotly trailing a doe.

I had a small buck 10 years back doing the tending grunt all the way in following a doe. Sounded like the tru-talker to me. I also had a small buck very close to me so I grunted a deep grunt to see what would happen. That buck could not get out of there fast enough, looking around the whole time for the bigger buck. This was in late Oct. and I was 15 yards from the deer. It was probably more the closeness than the tone. I had a doe come in this year with several minutes of a bleat/tending grunt sequence. It was calm so I know for sure she heard it but I don't know if it made any difference.

I only grunt when I see a deer that I want to work my way. I use the true talker, and the can bleat. The can has worked well for me. 96 I know what you mean when the buck is following the doe. I use that on my true talker, kind of roll your tounge and make a t t t t t t sound.

same here. i tend to only grunt if i can see a deer. if im rattling aggressively, i may through a few grunts in before i rattle, and maybe snortweeze at the end of my calling. i actually shot my 9 pointer this rifle season by doing such.
