Thanksgiving?

I actually stood on ice yesterday in slough pheasant hunting, Then I fell through just over my boots! I thought I could sneak over a wet spot but only made it about 10 steps. There was pretty close to an inch in the cattails in the morning but the afternoon sun killed most of it. Without a clod snap it might be a while. Christmas?

Today I saw a handful of canoes on lake Calhoun, couple of folks fishing from other boats, a windsurfer and a guy swimming! I sh*t you not, he stripped to his boxers and jumped in the west side of the lake! I'm guessing unless things take a serious change for the colder, It's gonna be a decent drive north to hit fishable ice thanksgiving weekend..... as big of a bummer as that is. I have taped and re-taped the reels to all my rods, charged the marcum etc etc.... I enjoy the warmth, but if it is going to get dark so danged early it might as well be 10 below and I might as well be out fishing on the ice!

If the long-range forecast from Accuweather is close to being right, there is colder weather coming in a week. The forecast for the Rochester, Minnesota area calls for highs below freezing and lows in the teens after Sunday, November 29. Generally, I've found Accuweather's ten-to-fifteen day forecasts to be a coin toss in terms of whether they end up being close. The Weather Channel's ten-day forecast calls for a cool-down too, but with slightly warmer temps in a week than does Accuweather.

If the Accuweather forecast is right, it will take a few days for water to cool down enough to freeze--smaller, shallower water cools down quicker. My guess is people north of the cities will be out on the ice on many lakes in three weeks. Down here in SE Iowa, some of the small ponds may be ready by then if all goes well.

looks like its gonna be a late start this year in Michigan too. Could open water fish in december that would be a first for me. Probably would too if we hadn't put the boat away for the winter
