slabchaser
After the last two weekends I decided along with my father that we want to build atleast two nice big stands. Anyone have experience with bilding these? We are looking for it to fit a man and a youth. Anywhere from 8-15 feet high. Have a roof and be able to shoot from all sides. Im sick of having my butt hurt after a weekend of hunting and something cozy would be nice when its cold.
Arctic
My neighbor has one of these. Don't build one unless you do it on your own land.Be very carefull if you use multiple trees for one stand, as they tend to get pulled apart when the wind moves the trees.Another option would be to build box stands (4'X4') in a single tree and then put a small ice-fishing heater in it for cold days. 40" walls break the wind well. buckhunter21
I have built a couple of them, they are pretty simple to build over a weekend. All we use are 4 treated 4 by 4's cemented into the ground about 2 feet down. Then just use 2 by 6's or 2 by 8's around the edge for the rim joists where you want the floor level to be. Then add some extra floor joists for support. We use painted OSB for the walls and roof and plexiglass thats hinges down for the windows. Overall we have maybe about $250 dollars into each stand, with the treated 16 foot 4 bys taking up about half the bill. Definitely makes sitting all day a lot easier than the portable stands. MinnetonkaMan
Go and get a plastic port a potty with the tank out of it. I would stop by your local servicers they always have ones with writing in them that they wont send out and offer some money for it. Put some angle iron on the bottom to bolt four by fours on it tip it up anchor it into the ground and good too go. U probably need a double wide for two people. Make sure they take the toilet area out for you, We have five out in the woods right now. Just sawzal the window out. It keeps the smell of human in and conceals movement. Just giving you an idea! fishuhalik
Ours are pretty basic, we just find three trees that are close enough together and build a basic frame, put in a floor and seat, and enclose it with some old carpet. We don't even use lumber except for the floor and seat, we cut down tamaracs (yes, they're on our property) strip the bark off them and let them dry for a couple of months. We use the same for ladders. It last for the better part of 20 years and is free. The nice thing about carpet is it's quite, absorbs sound that your feet make on the floor, and breaks the wind just as good as plywood. Never put a roof on one, but it sure would be nice on those rainy days!
Musky Buck
After a nice rainy hunt in areas I bet we all wish to be high and dry, I was soaked. My uncle built a $7,000 stand, ridiculous, but he wanted all the comforts of home and he got them. I only wish I had money to burn like that. T.S128
I do the same thing as fishuhalik but with four trees. not hard to make and comfrotable. Wes Ellis
Take a old pick up truck, take the cab of, raise 8 ft in the air , Roll the windows down to shoot!!! Just kidding.. All the stands we build now are self suporting. Then when the wind blows the stang dont move.. 4x4 or telliphone poles . steel..
fishuhalik
$7000? I seriously don't think I could spend that much on a stand if I tried. Does he have a full home entertainment system in it?!
deerminator
Any pics of enclosed stands guys want to share? I've seen some in the past and would love to see some more to get some ideas. After building the kids a playhouse this spring, I want to build a simple enclosed stand this summer. I was thinking 6x6 about 8 feet off the ground and cutting a horizontal gun window and vertical bow window on each side (sick of talking about it and just want to do it!). I have a regular spot on our own land I'd love to put this thing to use from firearms season on.
NWBuck
I've posted this on another thread before, but here's out "camo condo". It is 8x8 with plenty of height to stand. Mostly a gun hunting stand, but I do bowhunt out of it. Probably would add a couple of vertical windows if I wanted to do a lot of bowhunting out of it, but it's perfect for shotgun or muzzleloader seasons. Here's a closer look at the windows...we've killed a bunch of deer right out the window where this view looks. The door is in the floor, which makes in much more weather proof. Very cozy, and an ice fishing heater inside will keep you in shirt sleeves in sub zero weather. We have a total of maybe $500 in materials wrapped up in it. maros91
Have you harvested many deer out of it? The older I get the more I want to build one. I always used to think big permanent stands didn't get much action. How has the action been there?
deerminator
NWBuck, that is sweet. So did the metal panels come standard 8 x 8 or did you have to do any cutting with them, other than the windows?
fishuhalik
nwbuck, that is awesome! but come on, it takes all the fun out of deer hunting! Isn't the fun of deer hunting sitting the wind, rain, sleet, snow, cold.....wait a minute, can i sit in your stand next year?
Musky Buck
It was really like 8 grand, you name it, he has it. If you have money to burn like he don't care, he leases like a section each deer season, seems odd to me he doesn't want to or just buy a bunch of land. Must be rough. I know the guy who built it for him if you want a hook up anyone got 8 grand they want to put into a stand ?
fishuhalik
Let's see here...left pocket....nope. Right pocket.....nope. Sorry, looks like not today. Check with me tomorrow.
BeezeHound
Nice looking stand NWBuck. I just have a 4 x 4 box stand with no roof but after sitting in the rain Friday and Saturday mornings there will definitely be a roof addition going on in the spring, heck maybe even this coming weekend so I can have a roof over my head for muzzle loading. NWBuck
We ordered the camo tin cut to size. The only cutting that we had to do was the angles of the two sides for the roof line. Making the stand 8x8 made the panels work out very nice, as well as making it plenty roomy for 3 people if needed. And yes, it is probably among our best hunting spots, but we also have about 4 acres of foodplot varieties within muzzleloader range. Corn, soybeans, clover and brassicas all within 100 yards or less. We've harvested a bunch of deer out of it in the past 3 years. Here's a sampling... Buck I shot during late muzzleloader last year My son's first buck during youth season this year My daughter's first deer a few days later Passed this buck up last weekend while bowhunting out of it. He came within about 25 yards and I decided to shoot with the camera only If anyone is thinking of building one, let me know and I have more pictures I can show you to help with the process. Three of us worked on it for the biggest share of 4 days to get it built. We're talking about building another one on a different part of the farm this summer.
