Shooting the moon

Recommended Posts

I've want to shot the full moon for some time now but the weather never seemed to cooperate. I finally got the chance and the results were less then encouraging. This is turning out to be much more difficult then I thought it would be.

Any advice would be appreciated

Tech stuff: Nikon D90, Sigma (bigma) Zoom at 500MM, Manfrotto tripod and head, wireless release.

The attached (cropped) shot is the only one out of 55 that was even marginally acceptable (it spent a lot ot time in PS)

1/350, f11, ISO 200

You should also consider time of night. If the moon is shot close to the horizon there's more atmospheric distortion possible than if it's overhead. That can compromise sharpness (Dan, correct me on that if I'm wrong, but that's always been my understanding of the atmosphere).

And like Dan, I think this looks good.

Thanks for the response. Never having tried this before I was disapointed with the results

So many of the shots were just plain rotten, over two night I shot over 75 images and only got one that I felt was acceptable. Next time I try this I'm going to get out of town (Bloomington). Maybe getting away from extraneous light and the pollution will help.
