RIfled slug barrel

Recommended Posts

I've heard of people doing it, but after doing some reading up on it, and talking to a couple gunsmiths wouldn't really recommend it. The reason being is that teh rifled slugs don't have the jacket around them like sabots, and they have a tendency to leave lead in the rifeling.

I have a rifled barrel and shoot the Remington Copper solids, shooting 3" groups (3 slugs) at 100yds. This also puts me 2" low at 150yds.

I sighted my dads rifled barrel in this year for him as he didn't have time, he bought the Hornady SST's and I was very impressed with them also, shooting 3" groups at 100 yds.

You can, but it kind of defeats the purpose. And why when you have the rifled barrel. If it is because of price there are many options out there. The buck Hammer from remington would be one I really like. If your shots are close no real reason to buy the expensive ones as their advantages are longer ranges.

I shot Brennekke rifled slugs for years through my Hastings before switching to Federal Sabots. Accuracy was about the same and end results were always the same, dead deer. I shot the Brenekkes mainly for the fact that my back up smooth bore 1100 liked them as well and I normaly got them when they were on sale for $3-$4 a box. Got several boxes of Barnes Expanders from a buddy and shot those through the slug gun but won't pay $12 a box for them. I never had an issue with fouling, cleaned it after sighting in and after season with a boresnake and always maintains the same grouping and shot placement.

Note: I wasn't shooting the cheap KO's I only used the 1 1/8 oz 2 3/4" Mag load originals.

I don't think the KO's are much if any different than the originals. I shoot the Brenneke Golds. Or at least as long as I have some left.

The problem you might have shooting a rifled slug through a rifled barrel is the rifling on the slug from what I've noticed in the past goes the opposite direction as the rifling in the barrel. This might be in the event someone is shooting through a choke tube and the wrong direction rifling will possibly unscrew your choke tube, causing serious issues if not serious injury to the shooter.

I'm not much on ballistics, but if someone can confirm this, it would be greatly appreciated. The reason I brought this up is my Brenneke Golds had different grooves on them compared to the rifling on the original slugs.

I was told that Brenneke went out of business a couple years ago. Not sure if this is true. I just wish I could find more of the Brenneke Golds.
