Skunk Smell

Recommended Posts

here is a recipe that is used to take out the scent from dogs from KFAN's site, should work with anything though:

"Captain" Billy Hildebrand's Dog De-Skunking Kit

o 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide

o ¼ cup baking soda

o 1 teaspoon of dishwashing soap with grease cutter

o Sponge

o Rubber gloves

o Small bucket

Directions

1. Put on rubber gloves

2. Mix solution in proper measurements

3. Wet dog down

4. Work in the solution

5. Leave on the dog for 3 to 4 minutes

6. Rinse and repeat if necessary

I haven't done it for awhile, but after 20 some years of trapping, mostly for fox, every skunk that I got and I got hundreds of em, everyone sprayed, or let out the musk when I done them in and I tried every method ever written, more then once mind you and nothing practical works. I didn't try the syringe filled with poison, but thats about the only thing I didn't try.

A person just has to get used to the smell of skunk if you want to be a land trapper. If the smell is in ones yard, it seems like the rain takes care of it?

If you have a skunk in a trap, acetone in a syringe works everytime. You then can skin them and extract there essence. If you our your dog gets sprayed the method that Jmnhunter posted will work!

How do you get close enough with the syringe without getting sprayed??

I have a little story about this....my nephew and I were running a fox trapline up near Little Falls, Hillman, Pierz, a pretty good sized circuit taking in all the little surrounding towns and country side up there.

We got alot of fox that season, I think it was in the 120's and we got our share of skunks also, lots of em. We tried putting a .22 round into those skunks in everyway imaginable, to alleviate the spraying....even tried different types of .22 rounds, from cb caps to to long rifle, hollow and solid.

My nephew got to the point where he would jump out of the truck, grab the .22, chamber a round and walk right up to the skunk from the front and shoot em. I told him he was gonna get hit if he kept that up! "Nah, they can't spry forward and they aren't quick enough to get me!"

Well, one snowy morning, we pull into a field with the 4x4 and low and behold, there sits a big fat skunk in the trap. My nephew hops out of the truck, goes through the ritual, walks up on the skunk and just as he touched off, that skunk rolled over forward and shot him right in the face with a full load of of stink!

Man! The bullet had found it's mark on the skunk, but the skunks aim was just as good, square in the mush it got my nephew! Believe it or not, he stumbled around rubbing at his eyes and he feinted, or passed out or something? He went down like someone had pole axed him! I mean his hair and big full beard were just dripping with musk....I was scared he may have been blinded!

Well, I ran over to him and started rubbing snow on his face and shaking him and he came to, still clutching at his eyes. I got some news paper and rags out of the truck and cleaned him up as best I could and asked him if he could see? Pretty soon, after several applications of snow, he started to get his vision back. By that time, both of us smelled as bad as the skunk itself! With alot of blinking, he got back in the truck and we went on about the trapline.

Get this...after a time, we couldn't even smell the skunk in the cab of the truck...only if we cracked a window could we smell it.

Everyone else could sure smell it though! The lady at the gas station in Pierz wouldn't let my nephew into the store to pay for the gas he bought! A friend of his showed up at an opportune time, kept his distance, paid for my nephews gas and my nephew paid him back at a later date.

It didn't take to long to get rid of the smell, about two weeks for me, before I couldn't smell it anymore...probably took him longer?

Grebe good story.

Here is another one: This guy had a skunk in his garage. He borrows a live trap and is told to do this after the catch. Put a cover over the trap and transport the animal to a release point. To release the animal, ware a pair of leather gloves, and hold the animal by the tail up side down. Skunks cannot spray when held in this manner.

Guess what he got it from his chin to his belt. if this happened to me I would have turned inside out from heaving.

He ended up burying his clothing.

DUUHHH! would i be madder at the guy for telling me that, or myself for believing him mad? don't know, but i'd feel dumb either way. people would ask ya "man, what is that smell, did you wrestle a skunk?" And you have to say "no, some guy told me they didn't spray if you picked them up by the tail!"

[PoorWordUsage], that made me laugh thinking of that scenario! grin

I have shot a number of skunks with a high powered air rifle and so far they have not smelled up the place. I shoot them right behind the front shoulders thru the lungs, they flinch a little and just waddle off and tip over dead. Now I say so far they havn't smelled but some day I'm sure my luck will run out!!!

Just got back from Pheasant hunting in SD. My German Shorthair hates skunks, she points them, bites them and gets sprayed. She got a direct hit from 2 this last week. Jmnhunter's hydrogen peroxide receipe is the best I have used, easy, cheap and works.

I'm curious; Did the peroxide bleach the dog's hair??
