ok guys, I feel like I got a lemon for the Tanaka engine on this Nils, I am now on my 5th tank of gas with this running Amsoil at 80:1, fuel ratio aside the engine will not idle unless the choke is fully closed. If I attempt to bump a tiny bit to open it idles a little faster, but if I go anywhere past this nudge from closed the auger stalls at idle. The only way I can get it to cut holes is I have to hold the throttle wide open and then quickly open up the choke to full open. But if I let off the throttle it stalls in an instant. I have to go back to choke closed and start it again, no matter if the auger is warmed up or not, it will only start with the choke completly closed.

I am assuming something is wrong with the fuel getting pulled in but it is strange that it stalls immediately as I see fuel in the clear fuel tube. This was one thing I was worried about when buying a Nils, was the support I was goign to find for this Tanaka engine. Not sure if I should contact the factory or try and locate a Tanaka Authorized Service Dealer.

I would first play with the idle screw. It dont take much either way so do very small adjustments. Sounds like you just need to get the idle up a bit higher. Depending on how cold it is I will bump mine in or out just a bit to get it running the way I like it. I like mine at the point where it just starts to spin a very little bit once I get it started. A very little.

BB something is not right . You should be able to lay that auger down and it should idle on its own without the choke . I have to turn my choke immediately off once she fires . Check your plug to see if it's gapped correctly and in solid .

I can't find my owners manual at the moment so I can't tell you the correct gap .

I did try the idle screw but I don't think that is the issue, I still could only idle with the choke fully on (to the left), I know most of you are able to or have to quickly turn off the choke as soon as it starts as trapperdirk states, but if I move the choke lever to the right at all (towards gas gap) it stalls immediately.

Here's a picture showign the position I mean, also second question, do you guys have these gaskets that stick out? it's like they were not cut at the factory.

Your auger is newer then mine and my gasket does not stick out. Sometimes they do that though. If you take the air cleaner off you'll see two screws that hold the carb on. Open the choke and the the throttle butterfly. You should be able to see into the intake. You should not see gasket. If you want to look further take the two screws out that hold the carb on. There is also a small hole in that gasket that should line up with a small hole in the crank. That is where the carb gets its impulse to pump fuel. What I'm saying is the gasket could be askew so check to see if everything lines up.

It if looks like it was right then a Tanaka Service Center can get you fixed up. There are a lot of them.

Thanks ST, I checked as you suggested and everything looks clear all the way down the throat, I even took the two screws out the carb cover so I could see better but it looks clear, doesn't seem like the gasket is blocking it. I'll reach out to Tanaka to find a service center. Just frustrating to have this problem right out of the gate.

Hey All, just wanted to give an update. I took my engine to a local Tanaka service center and had it repaired under warranty. They had to replace the carburetor gasket kit (smaller gasket by fuel primer), according to them it was “sucked in” to the carb. and was causing the problem. They said it looks like it was defective right out of the gate but now it runs like a champ and idles like it is supposed to. It runs and starts and restarts at the choke positions you guys refer to. Frustrating to have this problem after dropping some cash on it but hopefully I now have years of trouble free cutting. After borrowing my brothers auger this last weekend I can’t wait to get back on the ice with this Nils.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
