Any luck elk hunting this year?

Recommended Posts

I've been out to Colorado off and on since 1998. We bowhunt elk near Steamboat. I didn't get to go this year, and it has driven me nuts. Last year, I took my two boys, then ages 13 and 17. On the last evening, my 13 year old snuck up on a 7x7 in a meadow by crawling on his belly through the grass. When he was about 30-35 yards away, he got up on his knees and got a shot. He shot right under the bull. The boys have been pumped to go back ever since.

How has everyone been doing this year?

Well so far my hunt is in the preparation stage as we don't leave until the end of October for 3rd rifle season. We hunt near Vail and have had some good success over the years. I will be sure to post how everything goes when we get back.

I got a change this year to go out to Co. on my first elk hunt ever. We will be hunting the 3rd rifle season in unit 68. (is this a good area?)

I got hooked up with a local out there that was looking for a chance to do some fishing in Mn. I just happen to have a place in the big Winne area and this guy we are going with is looking to trade a week of elk hunting for a week of fishing. I thought this is a good trade. What do you all think of that, good trade or not?

I would just be happy to see a elk, a kill will just be a bonus.

Although I've never hunted 68 and don't know anyone that has, it sure looks like a good area. The first elk you see in the timber will take your breath away and is something you will never forget! Good luck and let us know how you do. When are leaving (if you don't mind me asking)

Looks like we will be pulling out Oct.28th in the afternoon. Just going to get as far as we can that eve and find a good place to crash for the night. Hopfully getting to the area thrusday afternoon to get in a little scouting before the hunt.

I just got home yesterday evening from the first rifle season. We went 4/4 all cows. I saw four spikes and a raghorn and a 5x5 with a half dozen cows. I had a cow tag. The weather around Craig was not so pleasant with 20-30 mph winds and snow but the hunting was decent once the snow calmed down a bit. Good luck out there guys!

Good for you guys! Congrats!

I hope for poor weather conditions every time we go, I don't like the 50 - 60 degree sunny stuff, makes for good camping but poor hunting where we are at, nastier the better I say, well, to a point anyway.

Hope you and others can post up some pics.

Mike
