August Morson fishing reports

The time is flying by and I've only been up 3 times this year with very poor results. I live vicariously through those of you with better walleye skills.

Heading to my partners place at Fishermans Cove tomorrow, coming back Thursday. I'll post results after returning. The U.S. side has been very good as long as you are not in the "dirty" water---any clarity issues around Morson? Most of the reef fish to the west have been off the tops, at least on the shallower humps. Anyone pulling cranks on the deep sides or in the basin? Any presentation working best currently? Hard to believe the weatherman says three nice days coming!!

We will be in an OD crestliner with a Yamaha--if our paths cross, say hi.

Just got back from 2 weeks up in Morson. Walleye's were mostly off the sides of the reefs and off island points, but did get a 27" in 5 fow on top of a hump.

We were up July 31-Aug. 9. Cool, rainy and windy most of the week. Only two real nice days. Didn't spend as much time on the water as usual due to weather. Fish were few and scattered but got enough for five frys. Wife got a little 28" muskie and nicer low 40s muskie. Back up in seven weeks for the fall bite.

WOW!! Three nice, summer days in a row! Very warm with very little wind. First a correction: Sportsmans Landing, not Fishermans Cove.

Tuesday we only had a few late day hours but fishing was good. Second fish was a 28 and that was the only 20+ fish we caught for the trip.

Kept a crappie, 2 nice perch and 2 walleyes for dinner.

Wednesday explored new reefs and caught fish on most-biggest was 18 1/2 with a good number of nice keepers as well as little guys.

Thursday fished till noon as a storm was approaching. Didn't travel far and caught fair numbers of walleyes, big perch and three more slabs.

Spinner/crawler caught most with a jig/crawler piece catching quite a few also. Leeches didn't work very well for us.

Nice change fishing the islands instead of Big Traverse once in a while. Sure a lot of reefs in the Morson area.

We're heading up this afternoon. Looks like so-so weather, but we also have a project to work on. I've mostly fished reefs this summer, with good fishing, but may have to try the points too. I would imagine they're points leading into deep water?

SRJ, what kinda structure were you fishing/depth?

Sooner or late I will get it right---Sportsmans Harbor not Landing.

With one exception, we fished offshore reefs. Almost all fish came from the the sides or deeper ledges. Very few from the tops. The 28 was in 23 feet on some gravel a bit away from the rocks just before the mud started.

We saw very few fish with electronics. Is this the norm? Those we saw we usually caught. Also thought it odd that we didn't catch a single northern or smallie.

We just got back. Had some of the best walleye fishing we have had this year. Wife released a 29", lots of 22-25" fish. Loads of eaters and smaller. All were caught off points, 15-25 FOW. Hammered gold spinners, 1-1/2 oz. bottom bouncers, minnows or crawlers. Never went farther than Rabbitt Point for the eyes and did most of our fishing to the East. Two limits of crappies. Lots of BIG perch. One measured 13-1/2". Will be heading back in a couple of weeks. Duck season is getting closer.

Got back from the weekend. Interesting weather and fishing. About two hours or so we'd have heavy rain. Rained really heavy at times on Saturday (2 1/2 inches I believe. The bass tourney guys had some rain, but caught some nice fish. 26 boats fished it this year.

We fished points and rip rap shorelines all weekend, and really only one spot where we could see BV resort the entire time. We caught lots of small and mid-sized walleyes (10-15") in 9-14 feet, mostly along the breaklines. I caught a 26 and a 24 incher and my 8 yr old caught a 21 incher. We trolled spinners with minnows and crawlers. About every half hour they'd want a change from minnows to crawlers nd vice versa. Also caught a few nice smallies and some really nice perch.

Monsoon rains, lightning and big pigs!

Went up Thursday night and fished a bit on Friday, a bit on saturday and a bit sunday morning..

I say "a bit'' because we never got more than 90 minutes in without rain and lightning coming through. Baudette reported 2 inches over the weekend but I know it was more like 4 inches in Morson. Unbelievable downpours over and over... it was still raining when we left at 3 on sunday... the sun was out less than 30 minutes over 3 days!

But the fishing was incredible whenever we got out... we nailed two 28's, a 25, several 23-24.... a dozen fish over 20 inches.. and that's only about 7 hours of actual fishing total... we (usually 3 people fishing) caught many fish 16-18 inches...

My daughter's soccer coach got his biggest walleye ever (23) and his wife caught her first walleye ever on Friday. Her second one was a 24 and later that day she got a 27.5!! Not a bad first walleye day!!!

Basically only fished one reef (closest one to the cabin for lightning runs!) and very shallow, 8-10 feet... they were right on top of the reef and VERY active... best fishing all year by far... only tried a second reef on sunday just for a change of pace.... finally the hot summer pattern!!

The lake is coming up a bit but still way down from spring... blueberries were big and fat and very plentiful but the mosquitoes and rain made it hard to pick for very long....

Not sure on next fishing trip... only 25 days until duck hunting season!!!

Will be in the area (nestor falls) on Wednesday...so how bad are the skeets? Good to hear the blueberries are still around..how bout the black flies?

Not unusual for me not to mark walleyes when I'm catching em. At least not in the rocky structure I prefer around Hidden Island. I did have fun catching the 26" eye my wife lost while crappie fishing this week!

Had the Marcums out banging slabs up to 14" when she tied into the 26 & lost it. I saw her dropping down on the flasher, jigged her, and the fight was on. Just about more than my crappie rod (& my wife) could stand.

Supprised to hear that leeches weren't catching. THE bait as far as I'm concerned. Needed 1 more eye for shore lunch on Sunday so slipped out to a little rock pile by Hidden Island. In 15 min. had a 24" & 25" then finally caught a couple eaters. Leeches all the way!

Eyes this week were just off the deep side of structure 20-24' but caught several on top of a 15' hump yesterday. Weather looks stable for the week so maybe good fishing & I finally have some time to go!!
