For trouters only I believe the trout action should pick up for the rest of the season. Meaning two weeks until close On Oct.31st. and that means court is in session.Eric you can do those car pinics now ,James if your still peeking in its time again.and Rennberg I believe you know where Im talking about. Am going down there today to test the waters. Will report back later.

Well went down to the courthouse yesterday, and had a repeat of last years first trip. Got a late start 1 To 2pm. , Water was low and the wheather was a little on the warm for trout.I would say water down two or three feet. unlike last year I did not see big schools of 20 to 30 swimming together. But all in all I did see some nice trout in there. I stayed until night fall and couldnt get 1 to take home. I used five of the same lures I took my fish with there last year. and offered worms off the bottom with a lindy, and off the top with bobber, No go. Only two other fishermen came there yesterday, One guy and his young son I did notice him pulling one little one out. but didnt notice if they caught any more. they were fishing on bottom. Well Saturday is a whole nother day and this time like last Ill start out early and should be able to manage some fish. RETURN OF THE DRAGON

spike I believe you may be right. and was also curious what they might feed the trout in the rearing ponds. I have some power bait but I had left it in my van and drove my truck. also had some good salmon eggs.but left the top crackes and they dried up.found today, kind of upsetting , because I cant seem to find that brand out here I bought those in new mexico. back in Feb. then last year bought some of the same in Reno NV only to have stolen with tackle bag over at CALOUN. I am either going to try in the morning or first thing sunday morning. may have to wait for phone callabout job in morning. temp called me and wants to fly me out to so california pay for hotel plus 25 dollars per diem aday and 20 bucks an our. ot after 12 if it gos over. They need a bunch more people with class A license.the temp is labor now. if you have a cdl and would like to go to San Diego everything paid give them a call. Trout season opens up there next week. and I know where there stocking over 30,000 pounds of trophy trout. alot of ten pound plus up to 15. thats one of the reasons i HOPE this job gos through. SEE YOU AT COURT.

Fished saturday night and sunday night on Courthouse. Caught three and seen several more on saturday.
Sunday there were a lot more people fishing and the fishing was slower, but it picked up alot after most of the other anglers left. Caught two and lost two, and still seen alot of trout.
All rainbows. All caught on a two inch white power twister.

Dragonfish II, thanks for the update. Also thanks for telling me about the Court last year. I had a lot of fun. I will have to do a car picnic soon. Last week I had the pleasure of spending my week in Dallas for a work trip. Not much for fishing real close. Thanks again and maybe I will see you out there.

I was there early sunday morning thinking It my be better starting with sunrise. there wAS A NICE LITTLE FOG across the pond at that time of the morning. the sun started coming up but the fish didnt start getting active until around 8:30 or so . still very spotty.I had considered using a white or yellow twister since I had just bought a whole bag of new ones but never did. must have lost my little kast master out there saturday. so went withmy big kast master covering alot more area , managed two trout. Over by the follen tree the same large mouth bass I saw saturday came over and hung out for a while.maybe I look like a Bass to him. TIP FOR THE DAY Holland is getting stocked on the 30th or 31st for sure. Im thinking might be some good brood stock in there. check stocking reports and see what you think.

Eric I used to think the same about Texas but a couple of years ago was catching a connecting flight IN Dallas to my mothers in Ca.. Payed more attention on the way back and was amazed at the lakes I was seeing just north of Dallas.A lot of good lakes had done some research on line and found that theres some pretty fishing around the Dallas area. am thinking of making it there some day. so the next time you make it down that way. check the grapevine lakes area near Dallas on the internet. also if you fly in let me know if you think everyone in the area has a swimming pool,or was it just me.

Dragonfish II, nice report. I will be back in big D in November but just a fly in in the a.m. and back out on the last redeye. You are right lots of pools and there are some lakes. I have heard there are some monster crappies to be has so maybe next time I will hit grapevine. It's not very far from where I stay usually.

Well, I might be able to head out there, but I don't have a stamp. I've never had any luck there, and I've fished it five times in the last month. Maybe I will tomorrow.

fp

Question : Since I don't have a Trout & Salmon stamp, I can't fish specifically for those fish, right? What happens if I catch one?

The way I read the regs, I think on non-designated trout lakes it is legal to fish for them but not keep them.

"anglers need a trout stamp validation and a
fishing or sports license when fishing in designated trout streams, designated trout lakes, and Lake Superior, and when in possession of trout or salmon."

Holland is a non-designated trout lake, if you catch a trout without having a stamp, just toss it back. Most of the things you use for trout can be used to catch other species in that lake, crappies, sunnies, pike, and bass.

I thought it was a Designated Trout Lake. I'm quite sure that's how I found it. Either way, that's cool. So they give anglers two days to catch the big ones before the season ends...

fp

What's the best way to fish for a newly dumped trout? I was planning on using powerbait, but should I fish it off the bottom? Under a float? On the hooks of a small spinner?

Has anyone ever used a canoe or a raft/pontoon on Holland? Are they allowed?

I agree with Spike.

SOmething to keep in mind for future reference.
If you plan to fish on designated waters you cannot fish in/on them during closed season. Even if your targeting other species!

SO the accidental, ooops I caught a trout, but was really fishing for smallmouth won't cut it!

Thanks Spike!

WEll its not just for the two days. what there doing is stocking pre hardwater. its a little easier than stocking after the lake is frozen. these fish are actualy for winter opener. which is on Jan.17th 2004. so if you have 8 bucks and you fish in the winter it would still be worth buying a trout stamp. THe dnr will be around on opener checking for sure. and theres always other lakes where theres a 89 percent chance of catching a trout on Opener. like courthouse , or Cenaiko. they will be stocked between now and iceover. theyalways stock most lakes after Halloween the season end for trout, so there will be plenty for Opener in Jan. Well maybe Ill see some one out there today.LOL

So I rigged everything last night, woke up early, bought a stamp, and went out to Holland. The rule is still never try to catch what you can see. Exception : Sunfish and the like. Two nice 16" or so fish, and they didn't even look at my garlic salmon egg. Saw another one, same size, same area, so probably the same, and wouldn't go after "sherbet" power bait. Oh well. Depending on what girlfriend says, I may go after work. I hate work.

How do you catch trout at night? Do they bite?

fp

Saw something funny... A northern flashes up next to me, then started spinning in circles. It had accidentally clamped onto a stalk of seaweed, and was trying to fight it. After a good thirty seconds, it opened it's mouth and seemingly re-attacked the stalk, then was off. Whatever grows in that lake is still quite strong.
