Rising water

So last year My buddies and I were fishing out by the chaska area. It would've been around 0130 sitting on the shore when the river started rising. Within twenty minutes it went from me being about four feet away from the water to under my feet. Anyone know what it could've been. I have no idea, but it baffled me.

i have fished that stretch of river for a long time, and i was wondering if it was in the spring,or after a substantial rainfall.that is the only time i have seen that,is when the swollen water level works its way downstream.

i really enjoy fishing about a 20 mile stretch of the minnesota in that area.

i am not aware of any dams anywhere near there

Thats what I am saying on the dams. If I remember it had been awhile since it had rained, and no it was summer. This is what confused me so much. We racked our brains that night and came up with nothing. I do love that stretch of the river for sure. I'm sure if you do a lot of fishing down in that area then more then likely we have ran into each other.

Hey since you fish that area have you ever fished those to back high water ponds off of 41 there.

The weird thing is I don't remember ever seeing a barge in that area. Doesn't mean that they don't travel further down or up. I guess it would be like a tsunami in the fact that they wake would travel for quit aways. Just not on the destroying things level. Thanks for that idea Shack. Anyone else?

Sorry, as far as I know grin, Chaska has never had a barge come threw town wink

I would say it could have been a release of a wood/log jam upstream, or a major rain some where upstream you did not know about. One night last year, a couple logs caught my eye out of the darkness and next thing I knew, the who main channel was full or logs and trees heading to Carver! I never noticed a rise in water level (I was in a boat), but that logjam in Carver had me worried (being up stream).

I would say, it would hard to say what cause it.

Rising water like that only happens after a heavy rainfall in this area. It happens quite often that the rock you stepped on to get in the boat is no longer there on the way home.

You can predict this rise pretty easily by keeping an eye on water levels upstream of where you will be fishing.

One of my favorite places to fish on the WI river involves a long walk between sandstone cliffs and the river. One day the river rose enough to block my path back to the parking area. Nothing like a little rock climbing with three rods and a bucket full of stuff. This strecth is fairly close to a dam though.

The rain that falls down south definitely affects the river levels up here, sometimes VERY quickly! If the Mankato area gets a 2-3" rain, its nothing to see that water rise 1-2' in a night up here in the metro when the water makes its way up here.

I'm not sure how fast the rise was, how dry the landscape was, or when the last precipitation event was, but I almost wonder if there was a water treatment plant release. It would have to be pretty significant from what you're describing, and there are strict regulations on that sort of thing. Maybe a question for WWG? The MN is pretty flashy; with the right circumstances she'll raise up pretty quick.

Any one else notice that most of the snow is gone, and the river hasnt came up much? I was talking to HL this am, and he noticed it and comented that unless we get some good spring rains the river may be awfully low to start the season out.

I noticed a creek by my house is still frozen over. I am assuming the river will still rise steadily the next few days, but if we dont see some healthy spring rain, I may need to invest in a smaller boat.

I was just looking at the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service HSOforum for the St Croix and they are predicting a 3.9 foot rise in the St Croix by 22 March. Today the river is at 675.72' and its predicted to rise to 679.6' by March 22nd. I would think the Minnesota River will be catching some of that spring snow melt too.

How bad does it get there.

The flood in '97 had billions of dollars worth of damage from south of fargo all the way to winnipeg. I think flood stage in grand forks is something like 25 feet and the water that year was at 54 feet.
