BOW HUNTING MULE DEER IN ND.

Recommended Posts

HI, could anybody give me any pointers for bow hunting mule deer??

We are going out by Bismark area around the last weekend in Sept.

Do you spot and stock them?

DO you sit in a stand or ground?

Any info would be great!!!!!! thanks!!!!!!!

you already apply cause the closing date either is friday or just passed us? You have to apply for a Mule Deer/Whitetail tag but you can buy Whitetail tag over the counter. Best advice is to go out west further then Bismarck and hit up Medora and hit a tall ridge and spot and stalk. If your going to ground blind them your dreaming unless you have a water trough in front of you. Stands...usually no trees but a climber is helpful if your next to a river.

MD does seemed oblivious to my blind when hunting in MT...several deer within 30 yards.

Get a pair of leather gloves and knee pads for crawling.

If it is a dry year, the crunching ground/grass is your biggest enemy. Quarter to them from up wind...as they tend to be looking downwind.

If you are able to crawl up on one it takes a lot patience to wait for them to stand up.

I remember an article by Chuck Adams that said, "Take your first best shot. Don't try to get closer and risk bumping the animal."

If you want to shoot a MD doe, they come running in to a fawn in distress call.

I hunted mule deer in wyoming just across the dakota border it's all spot and stalk you have to have a good spoting scope or binoculars you should have knee pads and leather gloves thats a good tip wish I would have known that when I went everything is sharp it will keep you from picking slivers from your hands and knees. Also some heavy socks when you start to finish the stalk take your boots of you will be alot quieter with the heavy socks but don't forget to mark where your boots are and watch out for rattle snakes that was something I didn't think of till I ran into one.

Go further than Bismarck. There is a ton of public ground in the SW part of the state. Buy some maps of the area you want to hunt so you don't trespass. The ranchers out there have very poor people skills and are also very protective of land that they don't own. Some will tell you it is theirs or that you can't hunt it because you have to go through their property to get there. There are usually easements through the private to get to the public, but they may be off limits to vehicles, a bike would help. You're doing the right thing by starting your research now.

If there is little to no water in the area, you could hunt a stock tank or water hole in the evenings. Mornings are better spent getting up high and glassing, put a buck in his bed and stalk him. Get the wind right and do a good job of marking him and other land features, everything looks different once you've circled a mile around the back. You can spot and stalk the evenings as well, but you will run out of daylight a lot of times. Better to hunt water or crops in the evenings, you may have a crack at a big whitetail too, that way.

I'm going for the opener, let us know how you do.

Dave T I agree now aday but, How did we grow trophies in a state that allows party hunting and a firearms season during the peak of the rut? I don't want party hunting, but the rut every state must hunt the rut, every hunting show I watch it's rutting buck action for the most part and none of these shows are in MN. But, I do agree Dave and I'll be bow hunting the rut if we move the season back.
