Hauling a boat behind a fifthwheel

Here you go. In my opinion this is the only way to go when camping. You have the use of your vehicle, can put the boat in when and where you want and have a nice comfortable camper. I just started double towing last year and was hesitant. It is actually easy. It is no different than towing just the fifth wheel, but you have to remember the boat is back there.

Three – Vehicle Combination – Recreational Vehicle

(Pickup Truck / Fifth-wheel Camper / Trailer

Recreational Vehicle (RV): Minnesota allows an RV three-vehicle combination only if all of the following conditions are met:

• Only a “fifth-wheel” coupling is allowed between the pickup truck and the middle vehicle.

• The second trailer may only haul watercraft, a motorcycle, a motorized bicycle, off-highway motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile, motorized golf cart or equestrian equipment or supplies.

• The total combination of vehicles does not exceed 70 feet.

• The towing rating of the pickup truck is equal to or greater than the total weight of all vehicles being towed.

• The trailer hitch assemblies, as well as the pickup truck hitch assembly, must conform to MN Statute § 169.82.

• The driver is at least 18 years of age.

• No travel within the Twin Cities Metro area during weekday rush hour times;

6:00 am – 9: am and 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

No permit is available for a combination that does not meet the above criteria.

Just remember that this is a MN state law. Different state shave different laws about this. Some don't allow it at all and other have different length rules. If you plan on tripping out of state make sure you check the regs of the states you're passing through.

Having a class A will make it much easier for you, because a CDL is required in some states.

I read somewhere that it still based on the state where you licensed the rig.

it wouldn't matter where it's registered. if it's illegal, it's illegal. some things are legal in other states, but not in MN, doesn't make it ok here. some states let you put a hitch on a popup or travel trailer and put a boat behind that, but if you come through MN, a trooper is going to make you unhitch it and leave something behind!!!

I think what upnorth is saying is reciprocity. Some states allow you to drive triples into their state, even though it is not legal for people in that state to do so.

Do a search online and you will find some charts that describe the laws of each individual state.

Very very true that there can be reciprocity, but according to the charts and rules I've read, its very unlikely.

That would be like saying, the speed limit in MN is 70 so I can go 70 in other states. There are different laws all over the country and you have to knows the local laws of where you plan to travel.

MN is very liberal on towing doubles, but some states, have stricter rules and some states don't allow it at all. Some states have bumper height laws, some states have cell/gps/radar laws etc. If you use those items in a states where they are illegal, you might catch a break, but being from a state that allows it does not grant you a pass.

You can go to the towing world HSOforum, they have a table that says what states allow triple towing and the specs, and whether there is Reciprocity in that state. I tried a copy and paste but that didn't come out usable and it is a commercial site so no link. But it is easy enough to find.

If you haul in WI you can get an oversize permit which cost $ 10, that will clear any problem in that state, since max length is 65ft.

I do it every time I go to Algoma, WI with my rig.

Some issues to mention:

- Be sure you have safety chains and brakes on your 2nd trailer (by law)

- Be sure the tongue weight of the boat will not take much weight off the 5th wheel pin, you don't want the camper to act like a teeter-totter.

- You will not be able to backup, except for few feet (maybe), be sure you can turn around well at gas stations, etc, if you have a diesel truck use the big semi truck filling stations.

- DO NOT try to launch boat while camper is still attached. Unhook it and hook boat behind truck (I've got to mention this of course).

There are probably more issues many will pitch in for sure.

I do the opposite, I drop boat at camp and set up camper, then launch boat when I am all done, otherwise I will have to hookup camper again and set it up.

Knowing me, when boat is in the water..my "motivation" to set up the camper goes down the drain, I just want to fish.

I put a flag on boat railer frame that I can just catch in the corner of mirror while driving down the road. Saves worry on wether the boat is still back there. Also get in the habit of checking boat trailer tires on every corner as thats the only time you can see them from the cab.
