so i bought newly sharpended blades at the begining of the season this year, and they are already dull? shouldnt they last through the season? i go out 2 times a week and drill one or 2 holes each time. its a strikemaster lazer auger. it seems like they should last longer

Blades should last much longer than that as long as you dont abuse them...Make sure you arent putting weight on your auger while drilling holes as this can tweak the angle that the blades are at and cause it to get very difficult to drill a hole....also make sure you never store your auger in a partially drilled hole as this has the same affect, and will tweak the blades out of the proper angle. If you dont do any of the above and the auger hasnt been dropped or miss handled, have you been fishing on any dirty ice....it takes very little sand to dull your blades, even worse hitting a wood twig will knick you blade and make it almost useless

Check the pitch. It's likely off.

I have a lazer mag express and had the last set of blades on for two and a half years. I am not one to sit and wait for the fish to come to me so at times I am drilling 30 to 50 holes within a day of fishing. I know I had a couple thousand holes on the last set of blades so there is definately something wrong with either your blades or something others have mentioned. good luck figuring it out.

Blades could drill 1000 holes or you can dull them on the first hole. Sand and dirt on the ice will so that. Inspect the blades. At first notice you'll think they're sharp, look closer though. Your looking and feeling for tiny nicks and burrs. If the blades has one it won't cut. IMO that is most likely the issue.

I agree with surface tension....I have owned a strikemaster auger for about 15 years...great augers...but the blades are fragile and if one is slightly nicked they won't cut well at all. As mentioned...sand or dirt on the ice can mess them up even....or a metal ice scoop that hits them...etc. I would try new blades...I actually have had good luck with the resharpened blades...ones you exchange at some baitshops.

Another thing you have to be careful of is setting the auger on the ice too hard. If you hit it hard on the ice when you are getting ready to drill, you will knock the pitch off the blades and dull the ends of the blades. I lent my auger to a buddy a long time back and he set it down too hard and dorked my blades. I can usually get 1000-2000 holes easy out of a set of blades.

As for checking the pitch, often times the store you bought it from can check it, Strikemaster can walk you through the inspection or you can send the bit in to Strikemaster and have the store you bought the original from give you a "loaner" bit in the interim.

Where I fish, I have to cut thru alot of wind blown silt that settles down into the ice. Blades dont last long, sometimes, there is even a distinct difference in one outing.

What do you guys have to pay for replacement blades if you trade in your old blades?

Is it really within a few dollars of buying new ones?

Laser strikemaster, Im talking.

Make sure your blades havent come loose, or the auger shaft itself, I have had this happen a few times and it wouldnt cut, I tieghten the screws back up and I was good to go!

Where do you get the replacement blades for $16?

ya you really have to make sure that you dont hit anything but ice when you are using mora blades. They are very very sharp but the get dulled very easy. If you dont hit anything with them you can get a ton of holes on a set. I go about 3 times a week and drill at least 20-30 holes and mine are still sharp.

Don't make the mistake I did. A few years back I purchased an Eskimo Shark 10" auger. It's not the cheap looking style they have now. It actually had metal handles and was a very good running auger. I made a trip out to ND to a reservoir that had alot of windblown silt and sand. Came back and my buddies were out drilling me 3 to 1 on holes and sold it thinking it just didn't have enough RPMs to drill fast. I'll bet that all I needed was new blades. The only positive is that I ended up buying a Strikemaster Lazer Mag 8". Love this auger!!

When it starts to break though, its centering qualities are no longer there and there is a small shift. The amount of that shift can be influenced by a few things and that effects how much the blades will or will not bind. What matters is you need to adjust by lifting up a little bit when you reach that point.
