Fish in Tank?

Wouldn't the potential diseases fish can get in your tank be the same as the ones they get in their natural environments? I dont think they can develop new exotic diseases from being in a tank.
True, but what about the exotic diseases from the exotic fish that may have been in the tank as well.

I didnt think about that, I had new stuff for my fish.

Im thinking about investing in a new tank for Walleye, Smallies or Crappie. Do you just put crappie minnows in for feeding (my sunnines eat flakes)?

I think it would awesome to buy 100 bucks worth of gamefish put em in an aquarium and raise em for a couple years feeding them old minnows, nightcrawlers from the yard, insects in the house, etc... until the get huge and eating them or mounting them...(pending the law)

I'm sorry but I can't agree with you returning fish to the wild after you had them in your fish tank for a bit . There is no telling what the exotics in your tank carry and what the wild ones your releasing have been exposed to and returning them could be catastrophic to existing wild populations and exactly how some of these viruses etc are passed on .

Please don't do this .

Pretty sure releasing these fish would be illegal as well. You can't keep a fish and release it a year or two later. And there are different types of sickness' they can get in a tank that they won't get in a lake. They could possibly spreed it. Just not a good idea. If you don't want to keep them the duration, don't get 'em.

Tanks are generally warmer than the water in a lake not to mention you don't have the depths and they aren't swimming as much as they do in the wild. I'm assuming they would be mush and wouldn't reccomend that.

The creek i put them in has almost no fish exept for chubs so i don't think it's a big deal. All the water put in the tank was taken from the creek I end up realeasing them in and there only fed the chubs from the creek so they have a better chance of surving in the acual creek.

It's say anyone 16 or under can keep them so i'm sure I can release them as well.

dspohn, i doesn't sound your case is that big a deal to me either. Especially since you only used the tank for those fish. Still though, I don't recommend doing it again.

Those occasional piranha and some invasive plants outbreaks get into the lakes through people dumping their aquariums. Highly frowned upon, and like Sandmann said, likely illegal.

Do you guys with tanks and gamefish at home just dump some bait store minnows in there? I have seen worms on the gills and other strange parasites on bait store minnows before and would be afraid to do it. I think I would feel more comfortable with goldfish or something else with a little more QC.

I highly doubt the 4 fish i've released into a tiny creek with no other real fish exept chubs and maybe a sunny here and there is going to kill of the whole population of fish with some deadly disease.

Like i said the water was from the creek itself, changed atleast once every 2 months and they were fed fish from the creek itself too.

Again i've acually caught one of the crappies i marked and it was completly fine. All of the fish were completley normall when i caught them and released them. This isn't a big deal at all and isn't doing any harm.

the state of MN most likely begs to differ. personally i don't have much of a deal with it, but i doubt you know more than the people that have degrees in fisheries biology. perhaps you should give someone a call about the potential dangers. saying it doesn't do "any harm" is a blanket statement and i doubt its totally true.

You are better off feeding the fish shrimp that you can purchase at any fish store. They have frozen brine shrimp. You can also feed them crickets.

As for the growth of the fish: It has to do with the size of there surroundings. If you have a small tank, the fish will grow a very slow rate. If you were to put them in a 200 gallon plus size tank, the fish would grow faster, and larger, but not as fast or large as if they were in the wild.

Climate has a great deal to do with it also. In Canada the fish growth is much slower than in southern states.

The tank would be regulated at a certain temp, and would help, but you will never get a trophy fish after starting it in an aquarium.

I raised many Parana in a 55 gallon tank, and they only got to a certain size. When I purchased a 125 gallon tank, the parana got huge, and fast. Now, if I were to put them in a 300 gallon or larger tank, they would get larger faster up to a certain point.

Just a thought.

I didn't say I know more than fish biologists I know I don't. If it's not true than i'd like to know what these fish are harming. The chubs in the creek? I mean i don't see what "exotic" sicknesess these 4 fish could have gotten. Any sicknesess they would have had would have been only from the water from the creek or the chubs from the creek. So say some type of animal eats one of the fish i released it wouldn't be getting any different sickness that either the water or chubs would have given them.

Dude, like I said, IN YOUR CASE i agree with you 100% Just sayin' I don't recommend doing it again.

Cool your jets man! laugh

I'm not mad at all sorry if i came off that way i'm just trying to say i don't think i'm doing much horribly wrong here by realsing a few fish in creek with no fish in it.

It goes into a swamp/marsh type area, it starts in a small lake i belive, it doesn't run very long at all theres just a few pools here and there that can support a few fish.

You might want to talk to a local CO to see if there is anything wrong with doing that. They might consider it unlawfully stocking a reservoir.

Just a thought. A friend of mine got a big fine for just putting some pan-fish in his own pond.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
