permanent iced in!

Got to my permanent last night and found it to be iced in up to the belly. I've only had a permanent shack for two years now and have never had this happen. I had a 2x6 under each corner to keep it off the ice about 1 1/2" but it seems to be just touching the framework. I didn't have time to mess with it. What's the procedure for chipping it out? any info will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Lot and lots of work, sorry to say.

First, crank the heat inside. Let it get nice and warm, and if you have a way to get heat under the floor, all the better

Next, chisel out from a corner enough so you can get a handy man jack (High Lift) underneath. Install the jack and raise so you have good tension on the frame.

Keep chipping and repeating the process

Gissert is exactly right. A fan helps get the heat down to the floor too. My brothers house was froze in deeper than yours so you might not be in too bad of shape. A 2'x 2' piece of plywood is also nice to put between the handyman jack and your fish house in case it leans towards the house when jacking. Keeps it from smashing your siding.

I found an old pick-axe at a garage sale years ago and it has become standard equipment in my ice fishing truck. It seems to be much more effective than a bar or spud.

It is good to have a bar and blocks to lift the house. A second person is huge for that process as well as taking a turn on the pick.

Different conditions call for different actions but I have actually found the ice shatters better the colder it is and heating up the house had a negative effect. Not saying it won't work well for you or others but you might try it cold first.

It won't be much fun but you'll get it.

I froze my house in once. That was a lesson well-learned. I waited for a very cold day and cut holes with the power auger all of the way around the outside of the house. The holes were only about 4-6 inches down and right next to each other as close to the house as possible. I was able to chip underneath the house through the holes I dug with the auger. I felt the reason why it worked was what it was bitter cold making the ice for brittle and easier to break up with the chisel.

Don't know if this makes sense but it worked for me.

Good Luck!

MJ

Try jacking up on one corner like was previously said.If you cant get it loose the first time out, make sure to keep pressure on it over night. The movment of the ice building through the night may help dislodge it if you have pressure on it from the jack.

if you have fans crank the heat and turn the fans on to blow on the floor.that will help a little.then get a track jack and a chisel.jack it up so there is a little tension then start chipping away.jack up the front then go to the back and do the same.if its realy bad get a chain saw and saw just under your skid with the house jacked up with a little tension on.it should just pop up.i use 3x3 blocks under my perm i found out 1 set of blocking wasnt enough so i had to go with 2 sets of blocking.

i had mine stuck a couple weeks ago.all i did was jack it up enough to put some tension then i started chip away.that worked pretty good.then i went and did the back of the house the same way.i was thinkin with the heater thing.to me that sounds like it wouldnt work very well.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
