i have never owned a fish finder but ive used em and always wanted one, but for once a year i dont need anything special just a quality one that gets the job done and wont let me down. i was thinking about a fl-8? what do you guys think about them or is there a better one the isn't priced threw the roof??

To lower the cost some more look for a used one (online, pawnshops, classifieds)

The FL-8 to me is the standard. middle of the road benchmark.

a new fl-8 is 299 i would spend 50 bucks more and get the 12. i have a fl-8 and love it . i pry will no tever sell it !

ya the 8 is great and you will be happy with it, but there is the vx-1 by marcum that is a lot cheaper and has a zoom feature that the 8 lacks. The zoom is really nice when you have fish and the bottom and you want better target selection. Either way they are both great units as I have fished with both. There really isent that much interferance with a 8 and a vx-1 suprisingly

about time i seen this in writing feel the same the 0-30 is so important and a down right flaw on the new 12,20 and big brother 18. i love that setting who needs zoom buy this unit! wont need another one! bought mine from fleet farm for 249!and put it on your boat come spring!

go on vexilars site and you can get factory reman. for cheap and to me they are better cause they have been fine combed through and you still get 2 year warranty! fl-8 $229 good deal

I'm another one that'll stand behind the fl-8. Just a little FYI though: If you fish close to others that are using fl-8's or finders that run the same frequency, you'll get interference.

You may have to look at a step up from the basic and chose one with I.R. (interference reduction) so you can see what you're doing.

If you usually keep your distance, you'll be fine.

I may buy another Vex, but moreso for the technology than the bells and whistles. I have an FL-8 and IMO that's LAW!! I like the looks of the FL-12's, only for the flat screen, but that's hardly reason to pull the trigger. Go to the Vex HSOforum, they have 'reconds' @ a $aving$, with the same warranty as a brand new one, and their customer service is TOP NOTCH. Phred52
