I have been gone this last week, attending a Winter Creative Life Lab. It was winter! But I took my inspiration from all of you northerners and got out into the woods on snow shoes at least once every day. However, your inspiration didn't seem to be contageous. I had to go alone. Well not quite alone, I met this little guy in the woods.

Who-o-o-o-o Says I Was Sleeping??

I'm anxious to catch up on all of your posts. But first--the snow shoes are calling.

Cool to see this little one roosting so out in the open. smile

Especially at -25 degrees. I didn't know they usually were in burrows until I read an earlier thread here. My glasses were steamed up, my zoom lens was in my backpack with a huge goofy stuffed bear on top of it. (Bear hunt--you don't really want to know.) I had Wintergreen mittens on--really warm but essentially no opposable thumbs. Funny how you forget the cold--mittens went flying, glasses came off, backpack and bear went flying. Jayinmn mentioned luck--you have no idea. He was actually roosting below me when I was on the trail. Once I moved off the trail a little we were closer to being eye to eye and I would say 10 to 15 feet apart (not very good at estimating that). I didn't want to get any closer. On a vertical shot he almost filled the frame side to side at 300mm anyway. I got to learn a bit more about monopods this week. If I put it down on the snow, I couldn't get enough length to not have to stoop way over or get on my knees smile to take the picture. Took me all week to figure out I could set it on top of my snowshoe. I also bought the manfrotto ball head some of you recommended on a thread long ago (love that 'search' function!) It is much beefier and more functional than the one I had. But you do NOT want to accidently touch your lip to the quick release bar when taking your picture if you treasure having skin on your lips. I stood there picturing my tongue stuck to the monopod like the kid on the playground in that Christmas movie.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Oops! I guess I should have said cavities. This is what I read:

"I have found quite a few Saw-Whets in cavities during the day. They are similar in size and I was curious if Boreals did the same. One of these days I need to build some nest boxes for my property. I put one up at my cabin and it often has Saw Whet owls roosting in it."

I think the date was 1/1/09

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
