Mr. Heater sunflower style heaters?

I've used propane heaters while deer hunting in confined stands with no proplems. I see many others using them in ice shelters even though it is not recomended to use them in a confined space.

How safe is it to use sunflower type heaters in a flip over shelter? What modifications do those that use them do to provide adequate ventilation? Hans

I have a Mr. Heater Cooker in my portable and haven't done any mods to it at all. The vents on the house do a good job of moving air. And it heats that house just fine for me, i have heard of some people getting co poisoning after a long day in the house but i haven't had any problems with the vent open.

I use mine in my flip over all the time. I just make sure I take a smoke break about every hour so I get outside and get some fresh air. I had a buddy get some serious CO reaction a couple years ago (throwing up constantly, etc.) so I just make sure I get out and stretch the legs at least once an hour.

Some signs towatch for if you're worried about it:

Because CO is odorless, colorless, and otherwise undetectable to the human senses, people may not know that they are being exposed. The initial symptoms of low to moderate CO poisoning are similar to the flu (but without the fever). They include:

* Headache

* Fatigue

* Shortness of breath

* Nausea

* Dizziness

High level CO poisoning results in progressively more severe symptoms, including:

* Mental confusion

* Vomiting

* Loss of muscular coordination

* Loss of consciousness

* Ultimately death

Symptom severity is related to both the CO level and the duration of exposure. For slowly developing residential CO problems, occupants and/or physicians can mistake mild to moderate CO poisoning symptoms for the flu, which sometimes results in tragic deaths. For rapidly developing, high level CO exposures (e.g., associated with use of generators in residential spaces), victims can rapidly become mentally confused, and can lose muscle control without having first experienced milder symptoms; they will likely die if not rescued.

Just make sure that you have the flaps open on your shack and if you think that you need a little more air flow open the window or door a slight bit. I use a double sunflower in my fish trap and I get along fine with it. I usually only run one of the burners in that small shack...

I have used one for years, I open the vents but I am usually in and out of the house enough that it wouldn't matter anyways.

Also Carbon monoxide is heavier than oxygen so if you are concerned you could leave the bottom of your door open a little to let it escape now and then.

The only problem that I have had with mine is if you do not keep your heater in a clean area during storage you might get a small amount of dirt into the vent port or some of the passages. Kinda frustrating if you dont try it out at home before you go out to the ice and find out that you are going to freeze today... LOL

Otherwise great heaters...

Mines stored in the shack in the trailer all summer, going on 21-22 years old and other than screens and a thermocouple no issues. And I have mine suped up a little wink
How did you "supe" it up?

My buddy I haven't spoken to in a while did somethings to his and the darn thing sounded like a jet. He has absolutely no problem keeping his flip over warm in the deadest part of winter

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
