"How are the fishing biting?"

Geez, I can't believe how guarded some of you guys are. One of the reasons I like the outdoors is that most fellow outdoorsmen are polite, down to earth, helpful people. I try to be the same way.

So if some how you fall thru the ice, you are going to rely on a cell phone which would more than likely be in your pocket & wet? Just to keep a couple people who are out to catch a few fish and have fun away from you.

Good luck with your cell phone theory I will keep being myself and helping out the next guy that comes along, cuz you never know who might save your life!!

I'm that guy that will tell you how the fish are biting, what depth, color I'm using & when it comes to kids I've given them jigs out of my box and minnows (if I'm using them) just to see the smiles on their face when they catch a nice fish 2 feet away from me!

Have fun in your bubble.

Sincerely,

I will ask the guys next to me what they are catching. That way I know if im doing something wrong or they just arnt biting. Otherwise if it is a new lake i might ask how deep it is so I dont have to drill a hole, and how they are doing but you can normally tell if you are not welcome or if the guy is telling you the truth and dont mind you are asking. Personally I tell people how i am actually doing. So far never had someone really park right on top of me.

Well everyone is different, and with more people moving or deciding to live in this state the more our natural resources get stressed and unbalanced. Plus some people just wanna be on the ice or lake to be left alone and get away from the world. So to each their own. Like I posted before I tend to guard the spots I fish pretty firmly, especially the ones that fishing buddies take me to that produce. It's just fair to them as well. Its great if a dad and his kid are out fishing or even better out spearing together, but I honestly don't run into that much, but then I don't fish lakes in or near populated areas like the cities.

I don't ask where fish are bitting and I won't give out my exact spot.

Ditto that. Unless it's someone I know, I don't ask "how are they biting?" I've ususally got a gameplan of what I think will work, based on prior outings, past experience or seasonal patterns. I'd seriously rather catch a few fish with my own plan / ideas/ methods than catch em hand over fist riding someone elses coattails.

I'm probably too "hyped" up over catching fish, but I find it disrespectful to have someone come across the lake, pull right up, and ask something like that. If they stop a ways out, fish for a while, respect others space, and ask me in passing, I'll tell ya if I'm getting a couple. Usually they find out, if they stick around for a while, just by watching.

I am all for helping kids catch fish and enjoy the outdoors. This usually involves my nephews and nieces. I don't feel any need or responsibility to invite kids I don't know to fish with / around me. If someone asks me to take their kid out, great. Strangers, not so much.

I am usually pretty free with my information if someone stops and asks. I don't fish by crowds so if someone puts in the effort to come out to me I will usually share how I am doing. If I am by myself and they are also I will ask them if they want to join me. I enjoy visiting with those that stop by.

I agree, DB. It's ice fishing. It's not like it is the most important thing in your life like the Vikings (LOL). Let's try to keep it in perspective. Some guys take this stuff pretty seriously, but for crying out loud it is "ice fishing". If you want to be alone, don't go to a public place like a lake, stay at home in your basement watching reruns of the 1970's Vikings Superbowl losses. If you ice fish, others will fish close to you, some will actually want to talk to you. There is no such thing as "my secret fishing hole".

Fishing Minnesota is a great site for lots of information and folks use to share some pretty specific details about the bite. Lake, depth, presentation, etc. Now, it seems that some are just about old number one. I think we would all be better off if we shared information and enjoyed each others company a whole lot more. I am glad to see that there are a number of folks on here that seem to agree with that philosophy. Go Vikes!!

If people ask me how the fishing is, I will tell them.. as an above person stated, I have have gone so far as to drill them holes and give them jigs out of my tackle box. Especially if the angler is an elderly person or that person has kids with them..

I love to fish, and I love to share that love with people. HOwever, there are days I do set my fish house up so that people do not see how many fish I am catching.

I think there's less "combat fishing" in general around here so people are usually pretty friendly. People who are out ont he ice fishing are generally good people. If someone bothers to stop by and ask me how I'm doing I'll tell them. I want other people to fish and be successful as well. The more people that are involved in the sport, the better. Besides, maybe they will help me out someday.

Yeah, I too think this but there are some that are not polite and would rather fish right on top of you. At the same time I don't think that is unsportmans like to be tight lipped about your spot.

One of the things that I really like about fishing is being able to look at a map, make a plan, come up with ideas, and then hopefully catching. Don't get me wrong if I hear a tip from a friend I will try it out.

I will give anybody any info they want when they ask. only one excpetion as to one certain species of fish that I won't say a word about. My thinking is you still gotta catch'em even if I tell you how and where. The other things is I'm usually not in one spot long enough to get stalked.

Ditto -- usually by the time someone asks me how they biting, I'm ready to move anyways.

I have gone so far as to point some people setting up in unproductive spots where to actually move to.

After all, we are all just trying to outsmart an animal with a pea for a brain. They arent that smart and your spot aint that special.

i love how some people think that they own the spot where there fishing. like they own the lake or something? i can see someone getting mad about being to close to each other but just because your in the same general area as them? come on get a clue. i'd love someone to comeover to my house and tell me i cant be there because its there spot, i'd give them a hear full, slame the door in there face, and hopefully ruin there day. if you dont like me being there then you can leave whenever you want.

I also second that about showing someone with kids or elderly where ive been having the best chance at catching some fish. this is supposta be a fun sport everyone can enjoy and if they bring little kids thats even better to get them outa the house and away from the tv and do something that has been going on for generations. i love bringing my little cuz's along and seeing the look on there face when they catch the first fish of the day. it makes my day and theres, and they arent isolating thereselfs by sitting on there but and playing videos games. it shows them if you work at something it can pay off. i learned that at a young age and i wish every kid would.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
