Summer plans?

Recommended Posts

Pretty slow around here as usually this time of year. Lets talk summer trips/vacations you have planned and forget about the temps for a while.

For me it might be a musky trip to Green Bay. Also is time to get back on the Red Cedar R for an overnight canoe trip - I'll be doing one on either the Chippewa or Eau Claire R but miss the Cedar.

Maybe not exactly summer, but I'll be heading down to Pool 4 for walleyes and suagers come March/April.

Might also head up to Mr Hudson's neck of the woods and try for smallies on Cheq Bay - depending on gas prices.

Not necessarily a trip or vacation, but I haven't fished for flatheads in the past 2 years. Need to spend some time fishing some local spots that I found musky fishing - some of them just scream catfish!

Last option would be to head up towards Clam L area and try to hit some elk rutting activity in early fall.

Later!

I'm planning on going back to Montana to fish the Big Horn River. Hooked up with a local fellow FM'er (Sarpy Creek Boy)for a morning last year and had a blast. Gonna bring my brother and spend a few days this time. I sure hope Danny will join us again and share his local knowledge.

Dude - have you seen/heard all that they've done at Dairyland since the drop? Should be good fishing for a long time - maybe get that 'new resorvoir' type boom in fishing.

If you get to Wissota, what would you fish for? If you go give me a heads up, I usually have a pretty good idea whats going on out there.

Cooter, i've heard about Dairyland but haven't gone up to see it for myself. I've only fished below the dam and have done real well for walleyes, muskie and sturgeon from shore. I use to live in the area and want to explore the reservoir side. I bought my first boat last year really want to explore!!

As for Wissota I've heard reports of good smallies and walleye fishing but want to try it out for myself. I'm a good two hour drive from Wissota. I've fished the Jump, some stretches of the Flambeau, Holcombe dam down to Jim falls years ago when I was younger. I tell you that's an awesome fishery! Not sure how it is now though. I usually make a trip to the Cornell area once a summer. I'll let you know when I'm in the area, maybe you could give me a headsup. BTW you fish Menomin/RedCedar river much?? You ever chase the walleyes in the spring(March)???

I rarely fish Menomin, have spent some time on Tainter but am not real familiar with it. Walleye fishing on Wissota has really improved the last several years. There are nice smallies in there along with largemouth.

Sounds like the GB musky trip is a go - anyone have suggestions for time of the year to fish it?

Maybe it was just a good year but quite a few guides were having multifish (and these were fairly large fish) days very late in the season. Don't know if I'd push a trip to early November though, as conditions will probably be much more enjoyable around September, though the fishing may be tougher in the warmer months.

Just a little update with summer in full swing. I made a float on the Eau Claire river last week and did well on the smallies, biggest being 19.5" which is my biggest ever on that river - pics coming when the disposable gets full! Also got some small pike and had a little musky on briefly.

Floated the Red Cedar this past Sunday and fishing was slow overall. A few smallies and my bud got a nice 33" pike.

Hitting a different stretch of the Eau Claire this weekend, this afternoon through Sunday morning. Smallies on this particular stretch have been tough but there seems to be plenty of muskies. I decided to leave the bass rods and packed strictly musky gear. Weather is supposed to be pretty durn good, hopefully the fish cooperate.

Green Bay for muskies probably won't happen for me this year. I'm planning on at least two more canoe floats - one on the Chippewa River south of Eau Claire and the same group I'm going on the Eau Claire R with this weekend will probably do a repeat later in August.

The grand finale will be a muley hunt in Colorado come October.

How have everyone's outings gone thus far this summer? Take care all, later!

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
