Only thing that works now is taking it ALL out. If someones on a sled, which I've heard most thieves have been, who's gonna catch em???? It might make them hurry up a bit, but don't think it's gonna keep em from taking everything.

They have the advantage out there, if we're dumb/lazy enough to keep stuff of value out there. Sucks ya, but so did shutting my truck off and taking my keys with me in the winter when I make a quick stop at a gas station. That seemed rediculous when I moved to the Cities a decade ago. It's 2nd nature now.

I know I would not want to be fishing by your house, even remotely around your house if the alarm got tripped. I doubt I'd be fast enough to help stop the thieves, and then I (we) would all have to listen to a car alarm out on the lake. Good luck.

Dewey, love your "signature." My weakness does not, but good thought as I get ready for the morning workout!

Not really a alarm but a deterent, Rig up a loaded shotgun and put a string through the trigger and have it rigged up to the door, and when they open door they will wish they didnt! maybe a bit harsh but im sure word would travel fast!!

A bunch of treble hooks on a super line would definitely give them a preoccupation! Like "How do I get all these %&#*! hooks outta my head?" Would definitely cut the chances of arson too! It's hard to explain in the ER how all the hooks got stuck in your head. Phred52

That's a little over board. I don't have, nor would I keep anything in my ice house that is worth someone's life. Only if my family would be in the house at the time, that to me is the only thing worth going that far with.

The frabill siren tipup, whatever its called. there is a small metal pin that is pulled out of the unit when a tip up goes up. You could put that on your door, and if you have ever heard one they are crazy loud like a car alarm.

The word that would travel fast is how a fisherman assumed a 3rd degree murder charge and prison time in order to protect a few fishing supplies.

Mark your property with a way to identify it later (ex. Name, ID Number, etc.)

Take photographs of the items you leave in your fish house. (Ask yourself: Would I be able to describe my items if no photographs were taken?)

Take any valuable items with you when you leave that you wouldn't want stolen.

If you do decide to leave valuable items behind, bolt them to the floor.

Install a battery operated motion light to deter a thief.

Talk with your fishing neighbors and agree to keep an eye out for one another-find out who would be coming and going from each other's fish houses.

Don't leave antennas or satellite dishes on the fish house-this is just another way of telling a burglar: "I have expensive items in my fish house, come and take them". Chances are great that you will never see them again.

Leave your fish house unlocked (after taking your valuables home with you). This will prevent damage to the door of your fish house if someone attempts to break in.

Use common sense. If you leave anything behind, it WILL get stolen.

Call 9-1-1 to report ANY suspicious activity to your local police/sheriff's department-vehicles driving with their lights off or stopping at several fish houses for a period of time and moving on to others. Provide as much information as you can to the police such as: number of suspects, physical descriptions, clothing descriptions, any objects or weapons they are carrying, type of activity (ex: looking in windows, breaking into a fish house/vehicle, etc.), and any description of the suspect vehicle (ex: color, make, model, license plate number).

(suggestions listed above are credited to the Crow Wing County Sheriffs dept.)

i dont no if this would work or not but maybe settin up a trail cam some how to get apic of these dinks not sure how u could keep them from taking the camera too but it would be nice to have a pic to give police just athought

And the thief wears a skimask.......Good luck.

Just take the stuff out of the house.

I got asked by more that one "non-fisherman" friends this morning at breakfast about all the icehouse theft on the news and the subsequent vigilantism they were hearing about. I hope something regretable doesn't happen to a thief, or God forbid, an innocent party looking for help. I understand the frustration and wanting justice served upon these "unfortunates" that feel they have to steal and vandalize, but I don't know if we are the ones to being handing out the justice. I belief there is One who will deal with them, if need be, and hopefully they will change their ways before something really bad happens to them. IMO. Stay safe and Good Luck

I agree with you that ultimately only one will pass judgment but it certainly won't be the police, sheriff or any judicial agency. There is an adage that if you call the police and order a pizza, guess which one is going to get there first. Crooks aren't totally stupid and commit a crime while people or law enforcement are around. I say if you catch them, administer the judgement our lame judiciary system won't do. Then maybe a lesson will be learned. Oh yeah, and don't be stupid and leave your flat screen TV in your house. I caught a crook once in the act and administered some personal justice. When the police finally arrived nearly 1/2 hour later they pretty much made be me out to be the criminal. Now I subsribe to the SSS.

Metal sided house?? Hook up a 5 mile fencer to a 12v battery. Won't kill, but it'll give 'em something to yell about for a while! grin Funny sight... 3 idiots, strung together, howling at the moon and dancin' on the ice, at 0300!! I think I may have just figured out where the 3 Stooges are!!! They're alive and well, doing late night on the local lakes!!!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
