Went out tonight and had an ok day. 7 crappies total between 7 and 9.5 inches. Made a great dinner but I was surprised to find eggs in 3 of their stomachs when I cleaned them! I thought they spawned a few weeks ago. The water temp was 66 but it was around 70 a little over a week ago and I have caught crappies in shallow with eggs in them for 3 or 4 weeks now! (shallow as in 1-3ft) Are just different ones spawning than before or are they spawning again? Also where will they move to later on on a lake that is murky, 17 ft max, and structureless other than weeds in less than 2-3 feet?

I've been trolling small Rattlin' Raps and Salmo Hornets over deep holes next to weedbeds and across the breaks and picked up 10 between 7 and 11 inches. Seems like pretty consistant action so far with a few nice sunnies and bass mixed in.

Trolling has been the best way for me to locate them this summer - small jigs/spinners/minnows trolling as slow as possible with the electric over 8-10' flats.

Worth having markers in the boat and working an area if I find structure on the flasher

every once in a while a northern hits and takes a few runs on the 4lb test...

Went out this weekend and did the same thing, but the weather was slowing them down a lot. I could only get the crappies to hit crankbaits, but they wouldn't hit well enough to hook themselves. I had 7 fish on and ended up only catching one before resorting to sunfish. Did pretty well with ultra small jigs under floats. A 8 between 7" and 8" and one 9".

I had to change the pace of retrieval during the rain on Friday morning and keep the bait within a foot of the surface to get bites and good hook-ups and then on Sunday evening they seemed to like the bait being pop and stop style and they would hit it on the drop....

Wow, I can't believe I missed that one. I didn't even try pausing the lure and letting it drop. I had myself pretty convinced in my other method and should have tried altering my retrieve more. Oh well, lesson learned on that one. Either way, the sunnies were pretty decent for only fishing then for 90 minutes.

P.S. Dropping the lure was a killer technique for me on a different lake early season with jigs. I had a couple of 80 fish days this spring.

a 2 inch white grub on a 1/4 oz jig head kills at any depth and works if you throw it with a staight retrive as well as jigging

Shhhh! Haha I do the same all summer but use a 1/16 oz or 1/32 oz depending on depth so that I can fish it slower.
