Recap Ice Leaders Contest at Red Lake

Guest

Recommended Posts

Saturday's Ice Leaders contest at Red was a huge success. Plenty of slab crappies were caught, perch, walleye and some big pike were also landed. Of course the pike and walleye's were released. MJ5 even caught a Sheephead! Steve Brasel from Bear Paw Guides put us on the pile of slabs! Thanks Steve.

The contest was won by local Guide Tyler Brasel of Bear Paw Guides. Tyler is The World's Greatest Ice Angler til March 13 at LOW were he'll try to defend the title. Tyler also helped get contestents on fish.

We raffled off a bunch of nice prizes including an Otter Den ice house, an LX3 sonar, Stone Legacy Un Buckets and Jig Pole cases, Custom Jigs and Spins lures, Yukon Tracks super warm hats and a Barracuda power auger!

To top it all off Dave Hoggard and John Eggers cooked up one heck of a nice mess of Schweigert Smoked Sausages and chili! Thanks to everyone and the video will be available later this week.

Matt Bruer of North Country Guide Service also helped out a lot of folks get on fish during the day.
Thanks goes out to both of these guys. They are on the fish.

I hope to see a bucn of you guys at LOTW!

Yep, this weekend sure was fun. A lot of fish were caught.

Matt Breuer took JR Smith, my uncle Ken Johnson, my dad, a few others and myself out during the day and we got on some fish. Here are a couple pictures from the day bite...

The evening bite was very good too. Matt Breuer set me up a little ways off the crowd that Tyler brought out and I got on a good group of crappies. Very fast and aggressive fishing. By the time the sun hit the trees I caught 22 crappies, two of which surpassed 15 inches. Here are some pics from the pre-evening/evening bite...

A nice little fish fry to end the great weekend.

Congrats to Tyler, Mike, and Jennifer on the top three finishers, and congrats to Mike for the big fish.

Thanks Matt Breuer of North Country Guide and Tyler Brasel of Bear Paw Guide for putting people on fish and making the event such a great time!

See everyone on LOW!

Good Fishin,
Matt Johnson

I also want to thank Matt Breuer for giving up his hot spot. And Matt Johnson for letting me tag along. Although I was mostly a spectator as far as crappies went it was really fun seeing others pound fish. That was an incredible spot.

Brian,
Boy were those crappies piled up under my hole. For about 30 yards around me in all directions no one was catching fish, but I was marking fish for a constant hour and a half. Matt walked up and said punch a hole over here so I did, then the catching part was easy. Dennis, Rick, and the rest of the group were about 40 yards off me or so and they were on fish too. Atleast you caught quite a few walleyes. It was nice spending some time with you out on Tonka last weekend and then again this weekend on Red. Hopefully see you on South Center Lake on March 20!

Good Fishin,
Matt Johnson

We sure had a great time. We had a couple pics of our whole family with our fish from the contest. I'll post it as soon as I get the pics developed.

Thanks to all of those who helped put us in an area with active fish. All we had to do is get out a drill a few holes till we found them and we were good to go.

Those are my two daughters in the picture on the the home page. They sure had a great time. My wife and I are trying to make it back up there before the ice melts.

Again thanks to all that made this such a great event.

Matt Johnson, Matt Bruer and Tyler a big thanks to you all. Dennis you may need to ice down that elbow after that weekend of Slab pounding! WOW was that a blast watching you guys go off! I have never seen a group of guys catch so many slabs in such a small area. Funny thing was all the augers poping holes at eachothers feet didnt bother the fish 1 bit. I guess you can say they were agressive fish!
Thanks to everyone who helped with this Red Lake event. It was one of the best times I ever had up on Red.
Matt J. it was great taking with you and your uncle. You both are 1st class people! BDR it was great fishing with you. Come up for the opener on the river and we will get ya on some eyes.
Frozenminnow a big thanks to you, your beautifull wife and ma and pa! It was much apreciated!!

Here's Woodman...he put on a clinic. He's one of those guys that is awful quiet as he's cleaning em up. I'd have to put him right up there with the best of anglers that day (although I'm sure he wouldn't - but he is GOOD).

Check Pete Riola showing a crappie to the video camera (background). I was less than 15' from Woodman myself (a lot of us were).

Woodman, the Red Lake Nation did a fine job displaying the FM Red lake event! Besides the FM event there are many other informative articles to read as well, past, present, and future. I never realized the band had a beautiful casino/hotel/water park. Time to make plans for a weekend getaway to include fishing, gambling, and water fun. The jacuzzi/fireplace rooms are cheap too! smile.gif
