ArcticArmor1
Here's what the experts are saying: This may be a winter to remember for quite some time. The reason is we are still feeling the effects of a moderate to strong La Nina. Despite the ENSO being neutral, now we are in the cold phase of the PDO, which means that La Ninas are more common than El Ninos. Some of the forecast models that predict ENSO are saying that neutral conditions will continue right through the fall and perhaps the winter as well. They are even hinting at a potential weak La Nina. Another aspect that gives one the right to think that this will be a cold winter is the amount of cold arctic air that is already building up in the arctic. That may be a signal to this winter that it could be frigidly cold especially in the Plains. The overall Equatorial Pacific cold-temperature feedback to ridge-trough positions have allowed a distinct pooling of cold air over key regions of the world for the past 8 to 10 months that cry out cold, cold, cold this coming winter.
