DTro
If you want to target the gar, take a slip float and hang a fathead or small sucker minnow about a foot under it. We were out looking for a few white tipped carp last night and John was slaying the Gar using this tactic

DTro
There are a few scattered around, but for the most part it's still too early I think.
Scott K
Ya, I wasnt trying to catch them, and had one come off about 5 foot away, pretty nice one too Give it another 6-12 weeks and I will have to start trying to catch them again!

MinnesnowtaWild
I have caught so many Gar I can't even remember how many I have this summer so far. One was estimated to be around 4 lbs, the others are maybe a pound or two. Very cool fish, but not very big.

Kyle had the major mechanical failure of the afternoon lol You have any of those reels left?

MinnesnowtaWild
I don't know if longnose are in the MN River, and if they are I have only caught MANY shortnose. They look like they would weigh a lot and that's what I thought at first but I have caught some huge ones and the biggest was near 4-5 pounds (which was a potential state record). Scott K
I asked the guys I was fishing with, they said it was a shortnose gar for sure. And I asked about how big they thought 5-6 lbs. I guess I thought bigger, but they are just bones I guess.
ec30_06
There are not many longnose gar in the mn river, and it is close to impossiple to hook them anyway. It is hard to get a hook into the shortnose most of the time.
