Breaking bats.

Now that baseball has started up again, I'm wondering what's got to happen before baseball does something about the amount of bats that are breaking, and splinters and heads of bats flying into the stands or into a player. So many times last year, and now this year, I saw players ducking and weaving to get out of the way of these flying shards of wood. I don't remember it being that bad in the past. Are players asking for thiner handles for better feel? Should there be a required thickness of handles to try and reduce the amount of bats flying? I'm afraid someone is going to have to be skewered and bleed to death on the field before baseball does something.

That is one great picture!!!!! I just think the quality of wood isn't what it used to be. As far as something being done.... I doubt anything will happen. I know there is something that says if you buy a ticket than no organization is responsible if you get hit by a bat/ball or whatever.

I know a bat is very dangerous, but how many line drive fouls get hit up into the stands every game. Those are coming at the crowd much faster. The only thing they could do (and it would be VERY dumb) would be to put a net around the entire playing field. Even hockey has flying pucks which would be very dangerous as well.

So... No nothing will be done about bats flying into the stands! You could always sit and watch the games from the upper deck or outfield \:\)

A47, welcome to FM.

As far as broken bats, I believe there is nothing there ever going to be able to do to prevent it. I mean, thats part of the game of baseball, and if your that close to the field, you have to understand that its going to happen.

This is what baseball is all about, it would be nice to see bats not break and fly into the crowds, but thats just not going to happen

Maybe until a $100 million dollar pitcher get run through when the head of the bat goes flying out to the mound?

Why don't we give them tennis balls to play with while we're at it so nobody gets hurt when they hit a line drive right at the pitcher.

From what I saw at the game last night, I'm amazed everyone in the photo saw the bat coming. There were SOOOO many people there last night that had no idea what was happening.

Why do they even bother going if they don't care about the game?

Just part of the game. I play amateur ball here in Minnesota and we can have a rod in our bats so they won't break. We can do this cause if we used real wood bats teams would go bankrupt buying new ones. If you want a good real wood bat(Maple or Ash) be prepared to fork out a $100 bill. Of course there are no guarantees on wood bats as they might last you a week or might last you one swing cry.gif.

I heard some guy is trying to market his new bats that were made out of bamboo and were considered almost unbreakable. the MLB said they can't use them because they were made out of many small pieces of bamboo instead of just one solid piece.

they could try using aluminum bats instead, right? ;\)grin.gif

Town ball is fun, especially in a small town on a Friday night when the whole town comes to watch.

Yeah were pretty good. Been to the State Tourney 98-99 and 01-07. '01 we took 3rd, '03 took 4th, '05 took 2nd, and '07 was another 3rd. Can't seem to win the big one. Getting harder every year with all the guys getting older.

Balls and bats flying into the stands, better pay attention. Just like a hockey game, that puck can come flying up at any time. I thought they said one of the reasons for the bats breaking more was the thinner handles on the bats so the players get more feel.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
