charliepete2
Biff...two years ago I had a big sow with 2 cubs on bait. They just wouldn't leave. As it was getting dark I decided to try and scare them off by snapping a branch and accidently sent one of the cubs up the tree right across from me. After the cub came down and I finally tried to leave, my flashlight ran out of juice. I had to walk out in the inky black through thick cover where I new there was a sow with 2 cubs with only my bow. After that adventure I started packing in the pistol.
Bowfin
Had a sow with triplets under my stand one evening. Got dark and started clapping my hands to scare them off. The sow saw me and started woofing and they moved off very slowly. I climbed down and upon reaching the ground heard them coming back - I scooted back up the tree and then started yelling at them to scare them off for a second time. They moved off a ways and I made a beeline out of there. Bears confidence and comfort level on the bait is definately a lot greater once it gets dark. jkcmj
You cannot use 55 gallon drums or other non-biodegradable items on state owned land, but it was my understanding that they are legal on other private land and non-state owned land. Much of the land hunted in Northern MN is actually owned by the paper companies or counties. Would there use be OK in these areas? For those who cannot replenish baits daily, being able to protect it from the weather would allow placing more bait at each site allowing less frequent trips with the high gas prices. charliepete2
JKCMJ...the way I read the regulations you can't use biodegradable items that aren't removed at the end of the day whether your on private land or not. I wish the DNR would get on the ball and keep the rules up on their HSOforum.
