bigbearslayer
We used chocolate candys from lucky 7 and donuts last year. I used a scentball (wildberry) I did not think that it smells as strong as the spray any other idea about scent. What to do about racoons they eat a lot of my bait? roosterslayer
i have found that digging a deep hole and use larger logs have kept the coons out. I also like placing a decent size rock about the size of a bowling ball on top of the two main logs that cover the hole. this will also help keep out other critters like wolves and skunks! 89Bronco
I've never had a problem with raccoons. Must not be to many where I hunt. I will get pine martins and fishers to the bait and wolves for some reason like to hang around. A couple of seasons I've seen more wolves than bears. Bigbearslayer....would you say the $50 is not worth it for the ball? I've been curious about it and how I would place it so I wouldn't lose it to a smarter-than-the-average-bear bear. I just haven't pulled the trigger on that one. I can get a lot of bait for 50 bucks. Or I can fill my gas tank once.
bigbearslayer
I myself would not get one agin like i said i used the wildberry and my dad used the baconball and he did not like it as well I like the spray it seem to do the job very well. charliepete2
I seem to always have trouble with raccons. Even when I use extremely heavy logs, the raccons just show up after the bear has openend up the crib. I had about 10 of them on the bait one time. It was crazy all the noise they made. They scattered like crazy when 2 year old bear came in though.
maros91
I used the blueberry ball last year and thought it had great smell to it. Although no bears came to my bait last year . I don't know if I will get one or not this year.

bigbearslayer
I have a question about baiting what time of day should I be baiting? Most of the time me and my dad bait at 11:00AM friday-sunday we put out three five gallon buckets of dounts and candy. we scent it and go back to the cabin and go back at abut 1:30-2:00PM and sit tell dark and most bears come in late night. Why is this? Should we be baiting when we hunt or each morning? What time do most people bait and do you take it in a night?Like I said we put three five gallon buckets out but sunday we will put out like six five gallon buckets to make it threw the week is this to much? It is gone most of the time by friday. people have told me not to mix scents at a bait I dont know why this is?

Boar
This is crazy you guys are gtting me pumped far to early for bear hunting my ice fishing stuff is'nt even put away yet. But i'm already thinking of gathering bait or at least get my Mad Scientist Lab up an running an see what super bait I can dream up. Gonna ask the local dairy barn an see what it might cost to order me some syrups, Lucky 7 is just to far for me. I'm not gonna buy the ball this year either, I had great success bringing the bear in right away opening baiting but after that I didnt have much use for it cause the bear knew where the bait site was. In higher competitive areas I can see using it cause just the box the ball came in stunk my up my shop till winter.I gonna start gathering as many differrent types of goodies I can, cheap things like marshmellows, micowave popcorn which can be frozen then poped just before I bait so it's really fresh, a bag here an there of that cheaper highly sugared creal, canned dog food, mollasses at a grain elevator is really cheap, an so on. Man I cant wait. Later, boar

bigbearslayer
Thanks DaveFor the info is their a place that makes some kind of burner for a bigpaw or bacon burn? And when using mollasses does it matter if it is sweet or not?

roosterslayer
I am shooting a 350 arrow and a 125 broadhead!
charliepete2
I'm shooting some old school Beman carbon metal matrix (aluminum wrapped with carbon) with weight tubes and 125 grain NAP Nitrons. I got a total arrow weight of 560 grains and I'm pushing them 285 fps. I've got a little over 100 ft lbs of kinetic energy. It's a nice little extra bit of insurance in case you screw up. I've got full penetration on a bears shoulder blade before.
muskie55
I have never bear hunted before but I am going to try this year. Is it best to set up your bait station in heavily covered areas or is it ok to set it up in more open areas? The reason I ask is because I have seen many bears on my trail camera that is overlooking a food plot that I have planted fo deer.
89Bronco
Quote: What do you use for arrows carbon or aluminum and what weight tips 250 grain hollow point. Just started shooting a bow and haven't even got a deer with it yet. I'm not comfortable shooting at bears with the thing. Although, I have gotten 2 grouse and 2 red squirrels, so maybe someday... charliepete2
Muskie55....if the area you are hunting is getting lots of hunting pressure, setting a bait in a thicker area helps bring them out during the shooting light. If they aren't getting much pressure, I don't think it matters as much. I helped a set up a hunt for handicapped guy and he shot a nice boar right off a logging road with his crossbow from his ground blind.
Bowfin
I agree with Hubercita. Also if your goal is to shoot any bear, more open areas are all right. Yearling bears will come early and almost anywhere. If you want to up your odds at a crafty old boar stick to dense areas where the bear will feel safe. Dense areas are also more exciting walking out of at night!

Got halfway down my stand and heard a cub climb a tree somewhat close to me. Gets the blood going a bit.
tealitup
Thats the fun! Walking out at night knowing something is watching you. Or seeing a nice boar circling you until dark. I adjusted my bait so I do not walk by it after dark
