Which Ice shack to buy???????

I have used a viking(copy of the shappel) ice shack for 3 years now and it really worked for me. Being all pumped up to go ice fishing this past week I pulled it out of the shed to find that the mice at it!! so, I don't really want to spend much more than $200 or $300 max. I really like the mobile flip over type. So far price being a big factor, I am leaning towards a shappel At least I know what I am getting. any suggestions on flip-type shacks. ???

aquafang - I have a fishtrap pro and love it. Unfortunately I suffered the same thing with a mice attack they shredded some nice holes in my Shappel 4000. Patched it up with duct tape and sold it to a charter guide friend of mine for $150. Never leave your unit in a detached garage in the off season. It's a pain, but all my units end up inside and in the basement at the end of the season. That was an expensive lesson I learned.

I would check out the nordic two man by polar
great shak for the money. bought one this year and feel this is the best shak for the money. Can also be used for spearing for it is dark in side. Not bashing this house. Look at the Eskimo qf 3 and did not care for the nylon vs canvas.and the pivot points on each side is really to high.and no wear protection But it was a real tought call for the money.
I feel I went with the right choice for 399.00 with seats and auger holder.

I have to agree on the Frabill they have the best shell on the market.
as for mice?
regular bounce sheets during storage, store off the ground or buy an elctronic rodent repeller
All have worked for me but the electronic works best and protects the entire garage just make sure to get them for the house also, as they like to go from one Bldg. from another.

For what its worth. I have never fished out of a shelter. But I spent an hour at Cabelas today comparing the Frabill XLTwin and the Fish Trap Voyager. I agree with the others that the Frabill has a better shell (really like the black color for warmth too). But liked the seats in the Voyager better as I have long legs and want the seat farther back. I went with the Voyager.

Good Luck, they are both awesome.

The flip over seld types can't be beat for the on the go fisherman. In my opinion Otter has the best sled and you can depend on it for years of service.Plus you can get hyfax runners that will make it last that much longer. The shell should last for quite a few years also.Good thick canvas that will cut the wind, and zippers that are high quality. The shell attaches to the sled easily and tightly with snap on plastic channel and seals out the wind very good. You also have a few options when it comes to seating.I went with the bench seat(good for taking a knap when the fishing is tough smile.gif)

Eskimo has come a long way and is another option when the pocket book is thin.THey improved the canvas and will cut the wind better than their previous models.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
