How to mount reel?

I just got a new Jason Mitchell perch ice-rod and would like to know how you guys mount your reel? First non-combo I have ever gotten. I have always boughten combos that had the plastic shrink bands and put electrical tape over them.

I just wrap electrical tape around the handle. Simple and it works.

I also use electrial tape. I usually place some light paper or cardboard type material around the area that I will be applying the tape so if I need to remove the tape, It will not pull away any of the cork handle.

I use Tommy Tape. It is a self vulcanizing tape that only sticks to itself. It stays pliable in the cold and no sticky mess like electrical tape. I know Menard's carrys it.

I like to hold the rod in my hand with the reel not taped. This helps me get the best "Feel" of the rod in my hand. With my other hand I hold the reel in place and tape it on with electrical tape.

I've found I like the reel farther back on the rod handle. This is the cool thing about custom rods, you can tailor it to your liking.

I use masking tape on the handle first.. This I have found as a great base.. i leave this on all the time.. Learned it at Thorne Bros.

Then Eletric tape on top of the masking tape!.. Then you take the eletric tape off and use it during the summer time, leave the masking tape on.. and re-tape over the masking...

Ditto. I agree with boilerguy. Its nice to get a custom feel by placing the reel where you get the best balance and feel in your hand.

I am also a fan of electrical tape and not just because it's free. It works the best of anything I've ever tried. If you don't want the tape to stick directly to the rod you could always put the tape on sticky side out first then rewrap the reel with the sticky side in. This will also keep the black residue off the rod if you are using cheap tape.

Masking tape as the base, then electrical tape. Electrical tape on the cork can pull up some cork if taking it off. This info was from Thorne Bros.

Silicone tape (tommy tape) no sticky residue. I also back all of my spools with it.

I'm with airjer - tommy tape ( or self sealing silicon tape as it is also know) has pretty much replaced electrical tape for most thing for me. No more gummy [PoorWordUsage] on everything, and it has a bit better grip as it feels like rubber. If you havent tried it get some and you'll never look back

I use a self adhesive tape for hockey sticks. It looks meshy and grabs to itself. It helps remove slim from the hands and also doesnt leave any residue on the rod, reel or you hand.
