Skeeters

Fellas,

I'm wondering where people think Skeeters rank in terms of a good, quality fishing boat. I own an older (2000) Skeeter, but I've got a buddy who's got a 2007 1880 WX Skeeter with a 200 hsp Yammy on the back. In my opinion, it's the nicest boat I've ever ridden in or fished out of. I've been in dozens of Rangers, Warriors, Lunds, Alumacrafts, Tuffys, Crestliners, etc. and I like this boat/motor better.

On Mon at a fishing-related meeting I heard one guy comment to another that Skeeters were bass boats for people who live down South. I know that this is the old thinking about Skeeters, but it seems it still persists. I'd have to say this guy doesn't know what he's missing.

So... for those who have fished in a newer Skeeter, where would you rank it next to other comparable fishing rigs? How's it rank compared the Rangers and Warriors of the world?

Skeeter makes a good boat, theres no doubt about it, but if i had to rank boats themselves, i would say when it comes to an all around fishing boat, where your talking bass, walleye and fish and ski, i would say Triton, Ranger, Crestliner/Lund Sketter.

just my feeling on them

Wow! Bass N Spear you have a Crestliner above the Skeeter? (or Sketter as you put it) Have you fished out of one? Wettest, roughest, most cheaply put together boat I have been in....I have an 06' Skeeter 1880 and it's the friendliest all around boat I have been in as well....From Minnetonka to Ontario, nothing I would rather have..(except maybe a bigger one some days)

I dont think crestliners sales dropping 38 % over 5 years would show that they are a boat people are all around happy with.

Lund dropeed 23 % and glass boats are about par.

I own a Lund and a Crestliner but would not rate either at half the quality of Skeeters ,Tritons,Rangers,Warriors, etc.

But I simply cannot compare a Mercedes to a Yugo

Skeeter makes a good quality boat. I run a yar-craft for tournaments but have no problem hoping in a skeeter to fish. Skeeter is really trying to get into the walleye market more. With the introduction of their new tiller it will be interesting to see what happens. These tournaments that offer the skeeter bucks are the way to go for skeeter owners. My partners new skeeter will be worth an extra $2000.00 if we win a tournament in his boat. They can't be that bad of boat because I see alot of them in tournaments. For a wheel boat ride ranking yar-craft, skeeter, warrior then ranger.

I got a Ranger in '06. One of the guys I fish with the most got a Skeeter 1880 with 200 HP Yammy last year. We've both been in each others boat A LOT.

Both are nice boats, close enough to each other that whichever you like better is the one to go with.

Most people will say that Ranger is the hands-down leader in fit, finish, quality, features, stability ride, etc. Personally I agree with that.

But the Skeeter is a great boat too. In choppy water it's a wetter ride and a bumpier ride than the Ranger. I think the fit and finish in the Skeeter is nice and it has a few features that my buddy really liked, and I agree that there are some very nice features in the way the Skeeter is laid out.

The bottom line is that neither of us would trade our boat for the other guys boat grin.gif Or for an aluminum boat grin.gif

Scoot, if you refer your Skeeter as "older", I guess I have an ancient one from 1994. grin.gif lol I owned a Lund, Alumacraft T-Pro series and went to glass....I picked a Skeeter.

Skeeter went into the deep V market around 1990 if I recall. I have a few friend's that own 135S Skeeters from the early 90's. All of us love the Skeeters. They are built very well and perform very well, even after years of heavy use.

I've been in a wide variety of boats (Crestliner, Lund, Ranger, Warrior, etc) and they are all fine boats. I don't think I would own another aluminum boat again, but I certainly can't say I would only own a Skeeter. If the right deal come up some day on a Ranger, I may jump, but IMO I really like the Skeeter's performance. The hull on the Skeeters are very forgiving in all conditions (smooth, dry, quiet, fast) and I can ride that hull like a bass boat and move.. cool.gif

ChuckN, I only meant older in relation to my buddy's '07 model. Comparitively, I'm a '72 model, which makes me about as old as dirt.

M-M, of course I am! However, it's just wishful thinking as I have no chance in heck at a change in the boat department for several years. By the way, M-M, can you hear that? tick... tick... tick... Spring is coming and I'm sure I'll be pestering you again for help with the same old electrical problem in the boat. Several points lead me to continue to pester you on this one: 1) I don't know [PoorWordUsage], 2) you know plenty, 3) you need beer, 4) I can buy beer. The logical flow of thinking leads me to be pestering the heck out of you this April! grin.gif

Chuck, I know... I was funnin' ya right back.

Funny you mention the "half the age" deal-- I was just explaining to my wife how rarely I get to use some of my parts and how young they really are! ;\)

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
