Plain and simple, for me there is no substitute for my 25+ years of hands on openminded experience with sonars of all types on the ice.

Hey FB

I know you have heard about all sides of both Vexilar and Marcum. I own 2 Vexilars and one Marcum and the Marcum is the one I use. It is a very quiet unit (no humming sound). On the other hand I heard the fl-20 is a great unit I don't own this one but my brother does and on a recent trip to LOTW he wished he had my Marcum. It is much clearer and the moveable zoom is key.

...Or you learn from the experiences of others. Straight from the horse's mouth. LOL's

Then decide to be like mike or be diff like cliff.

Everyone I've known uses Vexilars and I'm the only one who uses a Marcum.

You have to choose what's your sell buttons are. From the salesperson, those buttons are features and benefits.

I still haven't caught fish with a chubby darter but I've caught fish with a rapala floating minnow w split shot on line...Just that many times the rapala gets line tangled. Thats another topic.

I have a LX-5 and could not be happier. Both are great units, one thing to think about is who you will be fishing with and what they use. If I fish with peolpe using Vexilars, they will get a little interference on their unit, if I with with other Marcums both are clear. My point is if everyone you fish with has Vexilars get the FL-20, if they have Marcums get the LX-5. Like brands seem to work better together in my experience, but get what you like best.

How far away should I be set up from my buddy who is using an fl-8? I have the lx-5 and don't want to cause him interference if possible. We will be fishing in seperate portables because others will be along too. I have used my flasher only once because I just got it, but man I love it!

Back when I was using a fl8-se, I would use it no less than 5' away in Rental shacks on LOW without any problems from my dad's LX5. Should work fine unless your super deep or on hard bottom, even then it should work OK. LB

  • we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators

Let's keep away from discussing personalities or personal arguments and focused on what's good about a MarCum and what's good about a Vexilar.

You may have to sort the wheat from the chaff FBM but you got lot's to ponder eh! BTW you did'nt see me mention Lowrance or any brand!!! Your fairly new here so understand some folks get a tad, hmmmmm, we'll say overzealous in their choice of brands and promotion of such when it comes to some of the more high dollar gizmoes we use out on the ice!!!

Fact is they all have their strong points.

Lucky for you he does'nt have a Clearwater Classic!

I never post on these kinda threads, have'nt for years so I'm out of this one!

yea i guess not, thanks! well i usually forget to drill the holes close enough together, which means we can not see both jigs on my vex. then because of that i turn mine off and let him use his. now we both should be able to have our flashers runnin in the same house

I've had a vexilar running on four years know. I've never had a problem with it and its great on battery. The problems I've seen with the marcums is they're blasting so much wattage through the transducers and its causing them to go bad. Thats why you hear of a lot of guys needing new ones in a couple of years depending on how much they use it.

Ok, so were clear that a "couple" is not "A lot" Thats how these threads end up taking off in the wrong direction. Not to get off on a tangent, but Marcum transducers are designed and built to handle considerable more power than what is being put through them. The testing that they subjected the transducers to prove they are more than able to withstand the strength of the signal sent out. Might have been something else besides the POWER the LX series use.

Zamboni, its crazy how much "Fun" fishing with a flasher is!! They really open your eye's as to what is or is not happening beneath you. Have fun and tight lines!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
